Here is little tire sizing education.
Did you know that 29 x 1.5 is the same as 700 x 38c and the same as 28 x 1.5.
Yes, 29 is 28 and 700c at the same time.
Tire sizing can be confusing with different systems—let’s break it down using 28x1.5 as an example:
1. Inch-Based System:
• 28x1.5 – "28" is the approximate outer diameter in inches, "1.5" is the tire width
• Common on hybrid and city bikes
2. ETRTO (ISO Standard):
• 40-622 – "40mm" wide, "622mm" bead seat diameter
• Most accurate sizing system; ensures correct tire and rim fit
• Note: 28x1.5 and 29x1.5 often share the same ETRTO: 40-622
3. French System:
• 700x38C or similar
• The "700" refers to the outer diameter (mm), and "C" indicates rim type
• Not always consistent, but 700x38C is roughly equivalent to 28x1.5 / 40-622
Are 28x1.5 and 29x1.5 the same?
Yes, in most cases they both use ETRTO 40-622. The difference is mostly marketing:
• 28" is common for touring/hybrid
• 29" is used for MTB-style tires with the same rim diameter
Tip: Always check the ETRTO code printed on the tire—it’s the most reliable way to match tire and rim!
