Last week I realized that someone I had once considered a good friend, had unfriended me on all of the socials.
My initial reaction was… shock… because I have no idea what caused this final break. Then came feelings of hurt and rejection, which show up in my body as an ache in my heart, solar plexus, and vague nausea in my chest and throat.
But almost immediately I began reflecting on the state of our “friendship” over the last few years. Yes, at one time- we were close. Then, a rift in our original friend group put me on the outside, and I processed a LOT of physical and mental anguish over this event. Supposedly, this person was not “taking sides,” but… she did.
She basically disappeared from my life. She has children around the same age as Zen, and after he came to live with us I fully expected- in fact counted on this person to be here for me and Zen, for Zen to have playmates to grow up with and for me to feel supported by my loving friend. That did not happen. As more time went by, I felt the physical feelings in my body of loss and rejection, by her.
I pulled back. I stopped myself from replying to her posts, but would still “like” the photos of her children, wish her happy birthday online.
I was content that at one point in my life, we cared about each other, and that this was now the state of our friendship- more like acquaintances than active parts of each others’ lives, sending her family well-wishes from afar.
So the unfriending was a shock. I began questioning WHY would I allow this new development to cause me pain? She was no longer a good friend to me, or my family. Nothing changed- she wasn’t there before and she won’t be here now. In fact, I think the unfollowing on all the socials was an act of actively TRYING to cause me pain. Wanting to what- punish me?⁉️
Loyalty ranks high on my list of desirable friendship traits. I know I am a kind, attentive, loyal friend, (also hilarious, grounded, trustworthy, honest, and hella FUN). Why should I expect anything less than what *I* would give in my relationships? I won’t.
That’s the shift. I don’t need to feel pain over this. 💥
