Structural and Systemic Factors
Sometimes the “hardware” is the issue, not just the “software” signals:
Fibroids or Polyps: Non-cancerous growths in the uterus that increase the surface area of the lining.
Thyroid Signaling: The thyroid is the master of metabolic rate. If it’s sluggish (hypothyroidism), it can slow down the clearance of estrogen and affect blood clotting factors.
Nutrient Deficiencies: Specifically Iron. It’s a vicious cycle: heavy flow causes iron deficiency, and low iron can actually make the uterus less efficient at contracting to stop the bleeding, making the flow even heavier.

The Metabolic Connection (Insulin & Cortisol)
This ties directly back ti my point about the “thermostat.” If the metabolic signals are off, the s*x hormones are the first to suffer:
Insulin’s Role: High insulin (insulin resistance) can signal the ovaries to produce more androgen and estrogen while lowering the proteins that “carry” these hormones. This creates a surplus of “unbound” estrogen, fueling that heavy lining growth.
Cortisol’s Role: High cortisol (the “danger” signal) can lead to “Progesterone Steal.” The body uses the same raw materials to make cortisol that it uses for progesterone. If you’re stressed, the body prioritizes survival (cortisol) over reproduction (progesterone), leaving estrogen unchecked.
