Restrictive diets NEED TO GO!
If you missed my story series yesterday I went through examples of some awful diets that are being pushed and sold to thousands of people every day. These diets have clients eating 500-1000 calories a day, doing 60 minutes of cardio a day, or drinking products that RUIN their insides. HOW IS THIS ALLOWED!

Yep. You read it right! Yesterday day I enjoyed a waffle, cookies, a burger WITH the bun, and wine all GUILT-FREE.

It’s not magic, it’s MACROS. (Ooo new tag line?! 😍😜)

I count macros and love this form of healthy eating the best because it allows me the most flexibility. As long as I hit my numbers, I’m good! BUTTTTT...quality over quantity still wins. Don’t shove chocolate and sugar down your throat all day- I’m still the biggest fan of nutrient-dense foods and getting your micronutrients! 🥦🥒 With that said, a day like yesterday won’t throw me off track because I’m still eating for my goals. BEAUTIFUL RIGHT?!

“But Ashley, isn’t counting macros tedious and stressful and takes up a lot of time?!” —> well, sure... especially in the beginning.. BUT, all new things have a learning curve. Once you become a Macro Master, it’s a piece of cake (and you can literally eat one, too!). You know what else takes up a lot of time and is stressful?
- not liking what you see in the mirror everyday
- critiquing yourself negatively
- continuously stopping and restarting diets
- wishing you knew how to feel better

DISCONNECT TO RECONNECT.

Sometimes you really need to get lost to be found. Before Corona, everyday life was stressful enough: meetings, deadlines, goals, etc. With Corona, we’re not back to the “old/new normal”, but with the added stressors of masks, social distancing, fear of exposure... it’s A LOT.
•
As a pharmacist, we’ve gotten ZERO breaks during this pandemic. I am 10000% thankful to have my job and be needed during this difficult time, but that doesn’t mean I’m not physically and mentally taxed from it. In addition, I can’t thank you all enough for your support with . I am busier than ever (which again, is a great thing and I’m not complaining!), but this biz is all from my tiny phone and I’m essentially glued to technology. Ew?

Even good stress can be overbearing, and I stress (pun intended?) to my clients that resetting and disconnecting are essential for mental health, which is highly linked to physical health!
•
This weekend, I decided I needed a vacation to reset. Covid may have kept me grounded in South Florida, but and I took full advantage: date night, brunch, beach, paddle boarding, brunch again, dog park, binging an HBO series... PERFECTION. Sure, it wasn’t like the old normal, but take what you can get right now, am I right?! This hour on the paddle board, phone-less and distraction-less, was key. With the 4th coming up this weekend, what will you do to disconnect and reconnect with yourself and others?

PS. We also went to Costco and I highly recommend avoiding that place. DO. NOT. GO. You’ve been warned. 😫

Carbs + Squats are the modern day Romeo + Juliet. A perfect match and gym rat romance 😍💪🏼🍑🥖

You shouldn’t have one without the other, which I’ll further explain below. The term “carb” or “carbohydrate” is almost like a bad word in weight loss circles. “OMG Becky you cant eat carbs if you want to lose weight! Ew! 😝”
...Becky needs better friends!

Carbs are important for weight loss and body recomposition. If you’re trying to build lean muscle, tone up, and lose weight- carbs are NECESSARY.
•
1. Carbs prevent muscle wasting. Carbs are our body’s first choice for energy. If they’re not being consumed, your glycogen stores are probably low, forcing your body to turn to fat and protein for energy. What good is all that lifting if you’re just going to let your body eat all that muscle tissue for energy?
2. Carbs help regulate muscle glycogen stores. You need energy to get through a workout, right? (And I’m not just talking coffee or preworkout). Your body relies on circulating glycogen and glycogen stores to power you through your day. When you consume carbohydrates, they’re stored for later use. A tough workout will usually deplete these stores, which is why eating a meal rich in carbohydrates post-workout is necessary to replenish those depleted stores. Carbs also help your body repair itself and recover- so you’ll want to make sure it has the energy to do so!
•
If you’re looking to build a b***y, sculpt some quads, or put any of your hard work in the gym to use, you’ll need carbs to do so. I recommend complex carbs like oatmeal, sweet potato, quinoa, farro, or basmati rice, as these are digested slower, cause less of a spike in insulin, and give the body sustained energy without the crash.

Phew. That was a toughy! 😅

These photos were literally taken 2 seconds apart. The first one is me pushing out a little, belly relaxed, and my shorts rolled down. Maybe it’s my age, but I HATE anything low rise these days..GROSS 🤮
Second pic my stomach is flexed and flat and my shorts are left where they’re supposed to be (side note, idk why Nike pro’s are SO high-waisted, but I don’t hate it).

Moral of this post? You only see someone’s best. I don’t walk around flexed all day. If I did, I would have a solid 8-pack just from contracting allllll day. Hey, maybe that’s my next idea.. 🤔

BUT REALLY- focus on your progress and yours alone because social media is just full of fake s**t.
•

If yes, don’t feel alarmed or ashamed, this is also me. This is also millions of other women and is a very common cycle. We focus on restriction and being “super clean” all the time, only to fall victim to deprivation and cravings. We turn to “bad foods” and eat until we’re overstuffed and sick, which then leads to an overload of self-guilt and shame. To make ourselves feel better, we get “back on track” by restricting ourselves again, only to complete the cycle over and over and over again.
•
HAVEN’T WE HAD ENOUGH?!
•
Let’s stop the cycle by stopping it at the start of the issue- restriction. Instead of going 100% for half the time, let’s try going 80% for the whole time. This balance won’t make us feel deprived and it’ll stave off the binge eating episodes.
•
Another option is to find alternative outlets to make ourselves feel better; to step away from the fridge and maybe step outside or dive into a book.
•
