In 2019, Allan and Kelly Haseley taped pickleball lines onto a few indoor volleyball courts and opened them for three hours on weekday mornings.

There was no grand plan. They just wanted people to have fun.

Those temporary courts eventually grew into Pickleball Charlotte, with more than 60 courts across five locations. But when Allan talks about what he’s most proud of, he doesn’t point to the number of courts.

He says one word: “FRIENDSHIPS.”

Indoor facilities give players year-round courts, reliable schedules, and protection from the weather. But memberships, rental fees, and courts booked weeks in advance are creating a different problem: players are paying more and playing less.

Beer City Open welcomed 1,200 amateur players, hosted every Major League Pickleball team, and brought one of the sport’s biggest weeks to West Michigan.
