Destroying the Fort Lauderdale Beach Basketball Courts would be a travesty and an injustice. How can these “public servants” blatantly lie like this, and why was this deal to create a private “mini-Monaco” all done behind closed doors? How can the city of Fort Lauderdale just sell away access to this historic area without local consent, or even knowledge? Despite the lies in this video, these public basketball courts are actually ICONIC and a beautiful sign of UNITY. It’s such an amazingly gorgeous, one-of-a-kind space that is accessible to EVERYONE in the local community as well as a revered international destination. People come from all over the WORLD to see these courts. They truly are legendary. And to say otherwise, and just give it away to private ownership via a “99-year lease” is so very wrong. Just look at the rich history! Roots in Civil Rights & Community Integration in the early 1960s: The courts were constructed after the pivotal 1962 federal ruling that desegregated Broward County beaches—a result of the 1961 “wade-ins” organized by civil rights activists like Eula Johnson and Dr. Von D. Mizell on Las Olas Beach. Cultural Significance: Since then, these oceanside basketball courts have become beloved gathering spots. For generations, they’ve welcomed a diverse mix of players and spectators—across age, race, and background—as symbols of unity and local tradition. This ICONIC place needs to be preserved. Fort Lauderdale City Commissioners should be ashamed and be held to account for their actions of wanting to take a key city park basketball court away from our wheelchair ballers....only to give it to their wealthy developers and their pickleball friends. SHAME !!!
