“The streets, squares, parks, infrastructure and public buildings make up the fundamental element in any community — the framework around which everything else grows,” Mr. Garvin told the New York Times in 2011.
He also maintained that two elements were essential to any successful urban space: pedestrians and parks. A city found its pulse from human encounters on the street and from soul-refreshing green spaces, trees and sunlight. Whenever he was asked to name his favorite building in New York, Mr. Garvin always responded: “Central Park.”

In case you haven’t seen it yet, please be sure to stop by Virginia Highlands Park around dusk (5:30pm/6pm) or shortly thereafter to visit the solar Winter Walk of Lights before Sunday, January 3rd. Wnjoy it while you can!
It’s a small 100% solar light installation at the Hearts field (corner of Joyce and 15th St) installed by volunteers and organized with Aurora Highlands Civic Association to bring a little holiday cheer this winter.
Sit and enjoy the lights, add your messages of gratitude and hope on mini hearts and display them, take a moment to read the other inspirational messages, and try your hand (pun intended) at a shadow puppet theater.
Also, volunteers put together holiday music that you can play on your phone while enjoying the lights. You can find the music here https://youtu.be/BAy3EM6kzcU or on the poster near the sidewalk at the park which has a QR code.
