From Dan Eaton - Heads up, boaters. Distress flares ARE NOT fireworks. Launching a distress flare without an actual emergency is a federal crime. Deploying a hoax flare triggers a false Coast Guard search-and-rescue response. Violators face severe penalties, including: Fines up to $250,000, 6 to 10 years in federal prison, Full restitution for the massive operational costs incurred by the Coast Guard.

As you head out to enjoy the holiday weekend, remember that boating and alcohol don't mix. Alcohol remains the leading known contributing factor in fatal boating accidents, and law enforcement agencies nationwide will be participating in **Operation Dry Water (July 3–5)** to help keep our waterways safe.

Before you leave the dock:
✅ Designate a sober operator.
✅ Wear a life jacket.
✅ Stay alert and watch for other boaters.
✅ Save the celebrations for after you're safely back on shore.

The best memories are made when everyone returns home safely.

On May 18, 2026, in recognition of National Safe Boating Week, the Mayor of Fort Myers, Kevin Anderson presented the Fort Myers Power Squadron and the San Carlos Bay Sail and Power Squadron with a proclamation recognizing the importance of safe boating through education. Officer Bradley Johnson, Public Information Officer with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, joined the Squadrons in receiving the proclamation.

The Fort Myers Power Squadron is offering the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators safe boating course. Do not become a statistic. FWC reported in 2025 that 68% of operators involved in fatal accidents had no formal boater education. This course is being offered beginning on Sunday, May31, 2026 and will conclude on Sunday, June 7, 2026 (2 sessions). See flyer for additional information or call Cdr Sam Bonilla at 612-418-7821

The Fort Myers Power Squadron is offering the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators safe boating course. Do not become a statistic. FWC reported in 2024 that 65% of operators involved in fatal accidents had no formal boater education.
