An 80-year-old Maryland man was seriously injured after falling about 20 feet into an interior shaft early Sunday at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, according to D.C. Fire and EMS.

Firefighters spent roughly 70 minutes rescuing him, breaching a wall to reach him. Family members said the man, who was being treated for seizures, was initially reported missing before they learned he had fallen. He is now in serious condition on a ventilator.

A hospital spokesperson declined to comment on specifics, citing federal privacy laws, but said the facility is in communication with the family.
