Me and pops went to a hunting, fishing, boat show yesterday over in Mesquite. Since I have my driving permit I got to drive. Going thru Dallas was a little hairy for sure. I made a few good contacts and some possible customers. There was another custom duck call guy there so I got to look at his stuff which was pretty good. We did meet a man named Ken Strahan who runs a ministry helping kids that don't have a dad around. His business is called Compass Adventures, a youth leadership ministry. He takes kids hunting, camping, fishing, kayaking and lots of other things. The kids earn points for certain things like good grades, community help, Bible reading, and other deeds. The kids also design and manufacture fishing lures and I think sell them but I don't know where. When they get enough points for deeds, they get to do what they want. Pops thought it was a good thing. Ken wants me to come and make a speech about what I do to make my calls, how I save money and things like that. He also ordered a bunch of very tinynon working calls to give to the kids when they go hunting, sort of like a merit badge. I am going to make several for him. I think it is a good project. I am going to like his page. Mom and Pops make me give back so I guess I will give back something.

I am getting ready for a FFA contest later this month. I am going to be competing In a word workers contest with several of my calls. During the Christmas break, I went to Denton and bought some really nice Texas grown wood that I'm making some calls for the contest with. I think it will be good to have calls in the contest made from Texas grown wood. I got some mesquite, burl pecan, black walnut and bois d arc. We bought some nice boards then cut them up into blanks. I had never been to a saw mill before. They had some giant slabs of wood up there. I will post some photos sometime soon.
This call is just about ready to be finished.
I have been busy making calls for an FFA show coming up next month.

Some pics of a few of my calls. I use all types of wood. Maple, walnut, osage orange, red cedar are all common buy I have made them from Gabon ebony, Texas ebony (really neat) cocobolo, olive wood, cherry, Brazilian cherry and oak. Oak is the least pretty to me. All my calls have a 5/8 bore. I am going to try some persimmon soon, it is in the same family as ebony and I bet it makes a fine call.
The weather kept me out of school today so I headed out to the shop to make a call. A guy wanted a call made out of cherry. I I'm very pleased with the results. Cherry is a nice wood to use for calls.

Shot a few birds last weekend.
I made a really nice spalted hackberry call today. Spalting occurs naturally in dead timber. It is a fungus that gets into the grain of the wood causing some really nice designs in the wood.
