I don’t know if I’m getting enough sleep.

And unfortunately, no amount of calculating the hours is going to tell me whether tonight is the night everyone magically sleeps through, or whether we’ve got another three weeks of this.

But I CAN notice: I’m tired.

That sounds ridiculously simple, but there’s a difference between being tired and then adding, “and I should still exercise, get everything done, be productive, keep up with everyone else…”

Sometimes practice is just working with what’s actually here.

Today I’m tired.

Maybe I don’t get a nap. Maybe the kid still needs me. But I also don’t have to pretend I have energy I don’t have.

And sometimes my entire yoga practice really is sitting down for Mommy Sangha.

That counts.

Cephalopelvic Disproportion is a real thing, And it would a real danger for moms and babies…But it is used waaay too often when we don’t have the whole story.

Maternal position influences the amount of space inside the pelvis.

Fetal positioning influences the size and shape of the circle interacting with the pelvic tissues.

And the amount of balance within the body affects how yielding or rigid those pelvic tissues are.

It’s too reductive to say “The baby doesn’t fit through the pelvis.”

The questions I want to know as a doula are:

What level of the pelvis in the baby interacting with (ie are they high, middle, or low)?

Can we shift mom’s position to create more room in that area?

Can mom move in a way to encourage flexion in the baby’s body?

How can mom move before labor to develop balance and yielding throughout the body to promote opening when needed?

What movement restrictions or collapse am I seeing as a teacher that I could help release or support?

Yes there can be a concern about baby’s size, but the body truly doesn’t grow a baby that is bigger than will fit through a healthy female pelvis.

If you have rickets, (pelvic deformity from lack of vitamin D- common in Victorian era) then maybe we’re talking actual CPD.

But if you’re a modern, active woman? I’m suspicious, and I want to look deeper. And I want birth professionals to do the same.

Come join me for a prenatal yoga class, or get the deep dive in the upcoming Om Births Prenatal Training (Birth workers, you’re welcome for the first module!)

Your birth partner does NOT have to stand there wondering, “Okay…what do I do now?”

Prenatal Partner Yoga is coming to The Gentle Place!
Friday, October 2
6–9pm
The Gentle Place | Framingham, MA

This is a hands-on workshop for expecting parents and their partners to actually practice some of the ways you can work together during labor.

We’ll explore yoga and movement for labor, different birthing positions (including how to actually get into and out of them!), massage and counterpressure, vocal toning, and ways your partner can help create more comfort and support as labor unfolds.

Because knowing a bunch of birth positions exists is one thing.

Having practiced them together before you’re in labor is another.

And underneath all of it? Connection. Learning how to communicate through touch, movement, breath, and the inevitable “nope, absolutely not that one” moments.

No previous yoga experience necessary. Come dressed comfortably and ready to move.

**Please register as a pair.

“The baby didn’t fit through your pelvis.”

I hear this far too often.

But the pelvis is not a fixed tunnel, and birth is not simply a matter of whether a baby is “too big” to fit.

The relationship between the pelvis, legs, position, and surrounding tissues changes the space available. That matters.

I’m unpacking what we often miss when we talk about babies “not fitting” in my latest Substack piece.

Turns out “I’m fine, I don’t need to feel this” isn’t always enlightenment. 😬

Sometimes it’s just spiritual bypassing dressed up as compassion.

Feeling the hurt, frustration, anger, disappointment, whatever is actually there doesn’t make us less compassionate. It gives us a chance to be honest before we decide what to do with it.

Because swallowing all of it and calling that kindness?

No thank you. I do not want to be Mommy Martyr.

On September 27th, I’m hosting a FREE baby clothes swap + doula meet-up at The Gentle Place.

We’ll be collecting donations over the next couple of weeks, so feel free to bring them with you to class and we’ll take it from there.

After you shop, come hang out with a circle of local birth doulas. Ask the questions you’ve been wondering about. Learn what doulas actually do. Meet a few different people and see who you click with.

Basically: doula speed-dating, but with free baby clothes.
Come take some clothes. Bring some clothes. Meet some people. Ask your birth questions. Build your village a little bit.

I see this all the time- especially with my advanced yoga students.

When we focus only on pushing the range of motion in a yoga shape, we don’t develop the coordinated strength the muscles need to be able to support the body in its usual range of motion.

And this can lead to the pelvic floor taking over the internal stability role instead of sharing that load with the intended postural muscles. I’m talking muscles like the glutes, transverse abs, psoas, and posterior chain.

The result is internal pelvic muscles which are locked down, while the movement in the lumbar spine and legs is wildly unsupported.

Your split and wheel poses might look amazing, but there’s no room inside the pelvis for your baby to rotate through!
Result? Long, hard labor, Challenging birth, and difficult recovery.

This is why in Om Births classes we focus on strengthening as much as stretching, and often on releasing over lengthening. And we look at the body as a whole, not just at one muscle group in isolation.

When the surrounding muscles are able to pick up the load, then the pelvic floor can finally relax.

Guess what, that makes for a more open birth pathway, easier labor, and smoother returning to movement postpartum.

It’s all in the balancing.

Sometimes breaking the cycle looks a lot less dramatic than we think it will.

Sometimes it looks like noticing that you’ve been nitpicking all day and saying, “Hey, want to go get ice cream?”

I’ve been practicing finding those moments with my son on purpose. Creating interactions where I know we’re probably going to laugh, connect, enjoy each other.

Not because that erases the moments I wish I’d handled differently.

But because the internal gremlin loves to collect evidence that I’m getting it all wrong.

So maybe I can collect some other evidence, too.

As we like to say “Head down is not enough."

The real origin of the Spinning Babies name is from the movements babies have to make as they navigate our pelvis.

We call theses the cardinal movements: Engagement, Descent, Internal Rotation, Extension, External Rotation, and Expulsion

And these are guided by how toned and balanced the tissues in our pelvis and surrounding body are relative to one another.

But that’s not all.

Since those same tissues guide the baby into the position they will start labor from, having body balance can actually promote a more favorable beginning position for birth, specifically we’re talking about having the baby Left-occiput Anterior (LOA).

Starting from LOA makes it simpler for the head to flex into the chest and for the baby to rotate to face towards mom’s back as the birth spiral commences.

Result? Smaller head circumference, more even pressure on the cervix, smoother thinning and opening, shorter and possibly more comfortable labor and smoother birth!

This is more than just going from head up to head down. This is about aligning for a hopefully easier birth experience.

And my personal favorite bonus, the class includes how to move during labor if baby needs additional space in moving down and out. Now how cool would that be to actually know why certain movements are helpful at certain times during labor?

Check out the links in the Bio for upcoming classes.

I sometimes hear students in classes say their baby is “Breached”

Just a point here on vocabulary

Breached is what is done to Castle Walls.

Breech is a position where the baby is head up in the pelvis.

One can be resolved with body balance, acupuncture, chiropractic, and may even be able to be birthed vaginally.

The other requires siege equipment (and possibly involves Monty Python 😉).

Thank you for your attention, you may now resume scrolling.

(Yes I know most folks probably know this, but it always cracks me up).
