Say “hello” to the yellow-billed cuckoo! Contrary to their name, they do not make a “cuckoo” sound when they call, but rather a distinct knocking sound.
These beautiful birds migrate to the eastern US each year from South America to breed and are more often heard than seen, as they are quite elusive.
Cuckoos specialize in eating caterpillars and have been traditionally called “rain crows” for their songs were associated with the arrival of rain on a hot summer day.
These birds can be heard (and if you’re lucky-seen!) all summer long at Peacock Hill Nature Park.
Be on the lookout during your next visit!

Trail trimming is an essential part of how our Park Rangers maintain safe, healthy, and enjoyable trails in our nature parks.
Regularly cutting back overgrown vegetation helps keep pathways clear for hikers, prevents hazards such as poison ivy, and improves visibility along the trail.
Proper trail trimming also protects surrounding habitats by encouraging visitors to stay on designated paths rather than creating new routes around overgrown areas.
