Bring Pro Hockey to Maryland

Many east coast states are seeing a surge in hockey participation and new facilities being built. Especially in South Florida with the addition of the new Panther's State of the Art Facility, and a new facility in Raleigh, among many others. The New Bowie Rink is well overdue, however it will be intended to replace an aging building, and not be an additional surface. Without private investment with local municipal partnerships, hockey will begin to decline with increasing costs, and less ice time to go around.

With the addition of the the ECHL will now be at 32 clubs, the same as the NHL. Without further expansion of NHL clubs(which is expected in the next 5-10 years), the ECHL will not be expanding. Could Frederick be Maryland’s Hockeytown? Congratulations Oakdale!!!

Twice as nice: Oakdale ice hockey wins back-to-back MSHL titles LAUREL – The Oakdale ice hockey team could be forgiven for celebrating a little early.

The DMV Hockey scene is continuing to take massive hits. Without significant investment in local infrastructure the scene doesn’t stand a chance. Read more below. Recent numbers are showing that the overall participation in the local scene is down, with the exception of Women’s hockey which is on the rise. We believe this is due to the increased cost of all things hockey related and lack of sufficient facilities.

Today, we learned that Skate Frederick would be closing for the time being to repair ongoing mechanical and operational issues in the rink. It was also announced earlier this week that the Bowie Ice Arena was also shutting down to repair issues they are having.

While ice rinks do require significant maintenance and funds to stay operational, (many operate at a loss) this does not negate the fact that many practices and game slots will be postponed or cancelled. It is already hard enough for many teams at all levels; youth, school, adult, camps, clinics and overall ice time to maintain their programs due to lack of ice time. Many teams end up being cut or folded.

While we hope Bowie and Frederick open again soon, and remain open, this does not change the fact that more rinks in Maryland are needed to support the demand for ice-time.

Many believe that Pro Hockey in Maryland can work, and it can, but it also may never happen due to facilities, funding, and other aspects that would require a league like the SPHL or ECHL to set up here. In order to facilitate the demand and grow the game in this region, more facilities need to be built. We hope this further proves why we need more ice facilities to accommodate the rapidly growing hockey & skating community.

Hockey in the south, especially the Carolina's and Georgia continues to thrive. Today, the ECHL approved expansion to Greensboro, NC to begin play in 2025-26. 🏒

The League’s Board of Governors has approved the expansion application of Greensboro, North Carolina for admittance into the League. The Greensboro Membership will begin play the 2025-26 Season at the Greensboro Coliseum 🏒📍
