October is a special month in our family. So many of my children were born around this time, along with my sister Alma and me. Lots of fall babies!
I also wanted to share a little about my son, Curwood, who turns 14 on October 25. Curwood is on the autism spectrum and is considered nonverbal.
If you don’t see me at the Bear as much anymore, it’s because I’ve chosen to spend more time at home supporting him and making sure he gets the attention he needs.
When he was little, I could simply scoop him up and take him wherever we needed to go. Now he’s about 5’7” and 120 pounds and becoming more independent every day. If he doesn’t want to go somewhere, I can’t exactly pick him up anymore! 😂
Being a mother while juggling work and business is hard. And when you have a child with special needs, there’s another level of responsibility because you’re always thinking about their future.
I’ve had many nights wondering if I was doing enough. Part of me wanted to be at the Bear, while another part of me wanted to be home with my son, making sure he was learning, communicating and getting what he needed.
Every year around his birthday, I look back and see how far he has come. Although Curwood is considered nonverbal, he is communicating more and more, and I’m so grateful for his progress.
I’ve worked since I was 15, but the hardest and most important job I’ve ever had is being a mother.
So if you don’t see me as much, it’s not because I’ve “made it” or because life is easy. I’m simply choosing to be home more with my son.
I’ve given so much of my life to my community, and I’m proud of that. But this season is asking me to give more time to my son and to myself.
Maybe that’s what fall teaches us. There are seasons for building, giving, letting go, and coming home to what matters most.
Thank you for supporting the Bear and for supporting me through every season.
Wishing you a beautiful and blessed October.
