We aren't downplaying reaction times folks, but talking a dose of reality that distraction and daily life is everywhere. Kids, spouse, significant other, your phone, your TV, trying to multitask, music in our earbuds, events and things happening around us, not to mention if you're not 100% when you leave the house.

Your reaction in non-range, non-range gear, every day clothing, working from concealment WILL be different. There's no stage prep, no walk through, no known round count, and you'll be doing it all while juggling life when bullets are inbound.

Are you ready?

Timers exist only in training…

Yeah that’s going to p**s a few people off unless you understand more of how the brain and our body functions. Let’s start this post off first by saying no we aren’t attacking the use of timers and that they have no place, but rather providing some food for thought. Truth be told, we love competition and find it enjoyable. If you’ve been to any of our events that we have hosted for the ladies of Armed Women of America and A Girl & A Gun you know how much we put into it!

Timers do measure speed and provide a consistent sound, tone, and signal that means react. There is a basis for determining improvement of a shooter and have data to measure hit factor and scoring. Timers and repetitions in practice improve raw times when utilized correctly to not engrain bad habits and poor muscle memory.

Auditory acuity is far faster of a reaction time. We’re talking microseconds when we discuss just how fast that your brain can process that beep. There is very little that it must understand.
So, what’s the problem outside of the range and why are we cautioning to not skew your speed with these numbers?

The problem is that when we are outside of the range, there is no beep, there may not be gunshots or screams first. We are relying on visual acuity and how long it takes the brain to recognize and evaluate what we are seeing to determine the course of action. Scanning, and not that BS range head whip-whip, but actual scanning, assessing what you see, and being aware is crucial. Even more, unlike on the competition grounds you can’t just immediately draw your firearm.

Visual acuity is slower. It takes longer for information to travel to the visual cortex. Slower detection times AND reaction times to inhibit the decision on what you need to do. You’re looking, scanning, and analyzing constantly, but unlike the range and competition by nature you are distracted. Kids, spouse, groceries, music in the car, smartphone, normal everyday sounds, everyday life happening all around you are all taking parts of your attention.

To complicate matters even more, on the competition field you have walked the course of fire and been briefed on the stage. You know the number of targets, number of rounds required, planned your reloads, know which way you are going, know the fault lines, your gear is 100% perfectly prepped, and nothing on that stage moves.

While the timer is great, out in the real world what happens won’t be indicated by a beep. Do what you can improve your situational awareness.. Make sure that you are spending time in training that challenges you and pushes you beyond the audio signal and engages even more of your brain.

Are you a member of church safety/security? You need to be here on July 11th - Intro to Structures
https://www.shootingclasses.com/eastgrouptraining/course/?courseId=6282

Being a member of an armed church safety team is more than just carrying a firearm on your church property. It’s more than just showing that you can stand and qualifying with a paper target. If you aren’t familiar with working in structures and going outside the normal setup where a target is “down range” then you are not prepared.

On July 11 from 9:00am to 5:00pm, E.A.S.T. Group will be instructing our Intro to Structures class at our training facility. This full-day class will be focused on moving students from their normal “range environment” to learning to move with that firearm. How to navigate doorways, hallways, rooms, and getting a better understanding of how to move in and around structures. We are going to take you from flat range to where you will be moving in the 360-degree real world and begin building solid fundamentals.

❓❓Questions we get about this class?❓❓

✅ Should I take this class if I am a new shooter? That’s a great question and to answer you need to define, “new”. We feel that this class is geared towards students that have good marksmanship, can safely operate their firearm, and are confident in their firearm handling. We will tell you what most others won’t which is if you don’t have solid firearm fundamentals, you are a liability rather than an asset.

✅ Can you instruct this at our church? For obvious reasons the live fire portion of this class is conducted at our training house and facility. It is of significant benefit that your safety team be training together not only in live fire here, but also dry fire, movement, teamwork, and planning at your own church which we can design and conduct for you.

✅ I enjoyed this class, is there more? Yes, we have other options that add more complexity, partner work, teamwork, and can facilitate what you are looking for.

✅ Do you have a “shoot house”? While some would consider it as such, we prefer it as a training house. You should already know how to “shoot” and do so with confidence in your abilities. Our 30’x56’ house and the accompanying outside areas offer 360-degree live fire and are able to be reconfigured relatively easy to fit the needs of each class we host.

✅ I see other structures classes firing 500+ rounds in a day, how does this compare? The truth is that you should already know how to shoot and have solid marksmanship prior to taking this class. We will do more with less rounds and run far more reps with this class so when you do go live your rounds will only be where intended.

If you have questions, reach out, we are more than happy to answer them! Training is a journey, come check us out.

Its not a movie or TV show nor a video game with a reset button. You have a split second to make a decision against someone else who has already made the decision and plan ahead of you.

We have stacks of glass and video to show that those rounds are not going to go where you planned...and those rounds are not under stress of live rounds coming back at you.

2026 Tactical Carbine Phase 1 - July 18 This is an introductory class for those who have purchased an AR or AK platform but have no official hands-on training with this firearm.

“Oh, it’s a low round count class, eh I don’t think that’s what I’m looking for.” We’ve seen that, heard that, we know the stigma out there that you must take a class that fires a minimum of over 500-rounds a day.

What if we told you that its incorrect and someone planted this in your mind? More rounds must be better! Sure, there are some classes where this may be true, but what we have found time and time again from not only our style of instructional curriculum and student feedback that low round counts can actually provide MORE! Student reviews time and time again we hear, “I was just at a class that shot 500-1000 rounds elsewhere and I LEARNED MORE TODAY WITH 300 in a day.”

Outside of basic marksmanship on a specific platform or running classes on competition stages, most of our other classes are a much lower round count. If you’re taking vehicles, structures, night/low-light, or a variety of higher speed and no mistake classes you better already be dialed in on your shooting. These classes are about putting everything else together, the shots in the course of fire are just confirming everything else was done correctly.

Don’t get sucked into the more is better. Seek training where round is purposeful, intentional, and fundamentally sound.
