IMPROVING YOUR WUSHU PERFORMANCE/COMPETITION

1 . Your main goal is to dazzle, captivate, and entertain – Keep your audience engaged from the beginning to the end. Create the WOW factor! Get them and keep them fired up!

2. Create the best first and last impression – Start and end calm and composed. Watch your demeanor. Project star power. Exude a positive vibe/aura, confidence, vigor and vitality. Keep it sharp, highly energetic, upbeat, and alert. Be assertive, look noble and majestic, and make yourself the center of attention. Eyes look forward not down at the floor. No slumping and no sign of lifelessness, boredom, or exhaustion. Don’t show the look of disappointment when you mess up, pretend like nothing happened and come back even stronger. Let the audience feel your commanding presence.

3. Make every moment and every movement count – There’s never a dull moment. Build tension, intensity, drama, suspense, and ACTION! Kick it into high gear. Go ballistic! Attack with fierce.

4. 3 main ingredients – power, speed, grace. Make sure your performance include these main ingredients.

5. Timing, rhythm & synchronization – pause for effect, slow to create drama, and fast for ACTION! Coordinate and integrate whole body movements to link from one movement to the next or start & stop altogether with perfect control. Show some peak moments by creating startling movements, spasms, a jolt/surge/rush of energy throughout your form, and fluidity in transition. Tight, loose.. tight, loose..

6. Use your imagination.

Roller coaster ride – Thrill your audience with an exhilarating roller coaster ride with dips and valleys and not a boring train ride.
Inspirational figure – assume the look of a dignified, heroic character, professional Wushu idol…
7. Your gaze – energize your eyes with a powerful and intense gaze. Make your eyes sparkle, active, attentive, and alert. No blank stare or lazy eyes. Direct your piercing gaze and glare directly at your target. (Remember the National Geographic Persian girl’s gaze?).

8. Quality of movements – Adjust and correct body alignment (shoulders down and rolled back, chest forward and open, back straight), posture, hands & feet placement, stances position, footwork, technique and balance. Observe yourself in the mirror, and watch yourself in action on recorded video then stop the video at any frame, you should always appear graceful and balanced . Energize and strengthen your hands and feet, don’t let them go limp and flailing about (especially the hand that’s not holding the weapon). Make sure each movement is clear, precise and controlled, sharp, complete and pack a lot of punch. Constantly making adjustments, checking your positions, placement, and perfecting your techniques.

9. Flaunt your strengths: Use the highlights (fancy moves, stunts, acrobats, tricks…) in your form as your moments to shine. Maximize them to your advantage: relax, go ballistic (all-out), flow gracefully to hit the climax, then snap into a beautiful solid pose. Remember to relax completely to prepare for the big stunts.

10. Momentum – Generate momentum to catapult your movements to great heights by racking up speed and expanding in the opposite direction.

11. Coordinate your breathing appropriately – Don’t forget to breath. Inhale and exhale to recharge your body to put out more power. Developing that mindfulness and that sense of connection to your body.

12. Stay focused! – As your form gets lengthy, pace yourself so that you’re not running out of breathe. Don’t let it wind down. You don’t want to look like you’re struggling to finish it. Keep it strong and filled with vitality. Don’t lose your audience.

13. Stay rooted and grounded! – anchor yourself firm and solid to the ground to stabilize. Sink down into your stances with your whole body weight. Standing and stepping with your feet planted flat and gripped firmly to the floor with your toes spread and grasp on to the bottom of your shoes. Imagine digging your feet deep into the ground!

14. Leverage your body mechanic – Use your whole body, not just extending and swinging your arms and legs. Push your entire body weight into each strike. Transmitting power from the legs by kicking out your foot, hip rotational force with the push & pull motion, twisting torso and upper body. Keep your waist fluid and in control and watch your body alignment for a natural flow of energy to produce the maximum amount of force.

15. Passion – Be dynamic! Put the spirit into the form for a powerful expression, rather than just going through the motion. Show it in your eyes and facial expression. Have fun with your form. Enjoy doing it!

16. Eye-catching – Make your motion and movements clean, sharp, swift, powerful and explosive. Make them big and wide. Loose and soft when in motion, and snap tight and hard when finish at the point of impact.

17. Sensation – When your techniques are spot-on, and the power is expressed properly, it should feel great! And you’ll get a lot of enjoyment out of it. Be mindful and aware of the way the movements make you feel, how the energy is exerted and flow throughout your entire body.

18. Rock the carpet ! – Do your best and have fun.

19. Rest – Get plenty of rest before your performance.

20. Nutrition – The food you eat is essential for optimal performance as you prepare for the big day. Make sure you’re fueling properly during training and day of. Load up on complex carbohydrates the night before your performance. A large bowl of pasta is a typical choice.
