What is a stimp meter? We have all heard the golf announcers comment on green speed and equate that to feet; the greens are stimping at 10 feet or 11 feet etc. So what exactly does that mean? A stimp meter is a 3 foot long piece of angled metal (generally) that has a small hole on one of the ends that can hold a golf ball. The stimp meter is lifted at the golf ball end slowly until the ball just barely roles down the stimp meter and roles out on to the putting green. That distance is measured and recorded, and the process is repeated in the opposite direction (to account for green slope). The average of the two distances are calculated. Most tour greens roll at about 10 – 11 and US Open greens can run to almost 14!

Did you know? If a ball mark is repaired on the green as soon as it is made it will completely heal within 24 hours, but if left the entire day it can take up to two weeks to heal.
