🌊 Your Certification Is Still Valid—But Are You Still Ready to Dive?

A scuba certification records that you met a training standard at a particular time. It does not guarantee that your comfort and practical skills remain unchanged after months or years away from diving.

Inactivity affects every diver differently. Someone with 1,000 dives will generally regain comfort faster than a diver with only five. Twelve months without diving is a useful guideline for considering a refresher—but it is not set in stone. Experience, health, fitness, equipment familiarity, previous conditions and the ability to manage stress all matter.

Ask yourself honestly:

Can I still perform the skills I may need comfortably and reliably?

Important basic skills to practise regularly include:

✅ Mask removal and replacement
✅ Buoyancy control and hovering
✅ Regulator recovery
✅ Out-of-air response and a controlled ascent—as both donor and receiver

Your readiness affects everyone. A stressed diver with poor buoyancy or rapidly declining gas can require the attention of a buddy, divemaster or the entire group. A planned dive may be shortened or abandoned—and nobody wants to witness a preventable injury.

Your certification shows your training. Your logbook shows your actual experience and when you last dived.
