Way to go Fred!!! I want to still be riding at 93 too 🚴♂️😊!!!
At 93, Fred Schmid's truck broke down on the highway on the way to Unbound Gravel. He needed a tow, spent the night at an RV park, and eventually borrowed a Suburban just to reach the start line.
He came anyway. As he has done on and off since 2015.
The Waco, Texas native holds 54 national championship titles and two world titles across road, mountain bike, cyclocross and gravel. This year, he's downgraded from the full 200-mile race to the 100 — a concession he made after riding 93 miles on his birthday in April and being "pretty worn out by the end of that."
When asked why he keeps showing up, his answer is typically Fred: "Because I'm a du***ss."
His cardiologist recently told him he has "the heart of a 33-year-old." His wife Suzanne, a neuropsychologist, puts it simply: "Fitness is the best way to maintain your memory and mental capacity, period."
Fred believes this may be his last Unbound. "The old body's beginning to show signs of wear," he admits. But his advice to the rest of us? "Just keep going. And maybe you can keep going a little longer."
