I have had multiple people ask about the details of Kyros Youth Running Club, so there needs to be a greater understanding and description of the program. To begin with, I have played and coached soccer for many years, I have taught in the classroom for 18 years, I have worked with youth at different churches, and I experience it everyday.....Generation Z and Generation Alpha are struggling. They don’t even know why they are struggling. Therein lies the problem. We haven’t done enough to help them. Now don’t get me wrong, we have been doing a lot, we have created very busy lives for our kids and ourselves and we are constantly on the move. The question is, were we focused on what was really important? Baby boomers, Gen X and Millennials, we have to step it up. We only get one chance in this life and we have to all come together to help. The boomers can’t do it by themselves, neither can the X’ers and Millennials. We are so inundated with distractions and noise, that we forget that the younger ones are always looking up to us to see how to live….and what are we showing them? These two generations will learn and mature, they will grow up, but who is going to raise them? Society, video games, internet, social media, you tube, music and movies, are more than happy to take that responsibility from us. We can take the easy way out, but that rarely turns out ok. Instead, it is usually regret, pain and suffering at the end of that road.
This program is not just about physical activity and it is not just about hearing scripture. It is not just about getting outside and being around friends. It is not just about encouragement and having a growth mindset. It is not just about belonging to a club and it is not just about growing physically, mentally and spiritually. It is not just about challenging yourself to accomplish more and it is not just about becoming who God wants you to be…..but it is all of the above and more. This program will teach kids how to work together, how to speak positive things to themselves and others, how to challenge themselves to get better, to learn God’s word and to see how it applies to their lives everyday. This training will help them be READY FOR LIFE!
The training will be twice a week for eight weeks and each session will last an hour. Each session begins with a prayer, warm up and dynamic stretching. We will then introduce the scripture and Christian principle for the week and discuss how these apply to the real world and their life. Next, the youth will be challenged with physical activities that promote running skills, such as proper form, plyometrics, pacing, speed and endurance. They will also focus on different social skills such as self control, perseverance, patience, team work, and critical thinking. The cool down, stretch, and wrap up will end the session and we will close with prayer. Our main goal is to empower and train these generations to become better everyday and to understand their God-given purpose. The skills they learn are applicable for today and for the rest of their life.
The name of the club is Kyros, which is a Greek name that means Lord and is derived from the Greek letters, Chi and Rho. These letters also represent the first two letters of the word Christ. The emperor Constantine used these letters after he saw a vision in the sky and the phrase, “Conquer by this sign.” The Chi Rho symbol was also used as a secret sign by Christians in the early years of the faith. These are very important letters. Everything that we do in Kyros YRC has a meaning and is done intentionally. God has called each of us to be conquerors and with this sign, Chi Rho, we will do just that.
