In Jiu-Jitsu, the stripes on the belt are small pieces of tape that an instructor adds between belt promotions.
They serve several important purposes for both students and coaches. 🥋
1️⃣Motivation and Goal Setting
Stripes act as short-term milestones on the path to the next belt. Since belt promotions can take years, stripes help students stay motivated by showing that their effort is being noticed and rewarded.
Example:
A student might train for months before receiving a belt promotion, but stripes allow the instructor to acknowledge improvement along the way.
2️⃣Measuring Progress
Stripes give a rough indication of experience and development within a belt level.
For instance:
A 4-stripe white belt usually has significantly more mat experience than a brand-new white belt.
It helps instructors pair students appropriately for training.
3️⃣Recognition of Skill Development
Stripes can represent improvement in several areas, such as:
Technical knowledge
Consistency in training
Ability to apply techniques during sparring
Understanding of strategy and defense
Instructors often award stripes when they see overall growth, not just a single skill.
4️⃣Instructor Feedback System
Stripes communicate the instructor’s assessment of a student’s development. It tells the student:
“You’re progressing correctly.”
“Keep working on the path you’re on.”
5️⃣Academy Culture and Structure
Not every school uses stripes the same way. Some academies give them regularly, while others rarely use them. But in most gyms they create a structured progression system within belts.

Tournament Performance Review :
Jackson competed this past weekend in his first tournament and earned 2nd place, demonstrating strong technical ex*****on, focus, and composure throughout the event.
A 19-year-old 2-stripe white belt who has been training with us for nearly a year, Jackson displayed excellent discipline and attentiveness to coaching. In his opening match, he executed the game plan effectively pulling guard, securing the sweep, and finishing with a bow-and-arrow choke, a technique he has been consistently developing in training.
In the final match, his opponent adopted a defensive strategy, maintaining tight side control and limiting transitions for the duration of the bout. While the outcome did not allow Jackson to fully implement his offense, it provided an important learning experience in dealing with non-engaging opponents.
Overall, this competition was a positive step in Jackson’s development, combining strong performance with valuable lessons. We are proud of his commitment and look forward to his continued progress ~BULL&BEAR GYM
