Whether following, coaching, or owning a gym, here are a few thoughts and observations I wish others knew about CrossFit.

Which one resonates most with you?

I walked into a CrossFit gym with little to no knowledge on how to do any of the movements or lifts.

I’ve coached and watched people come through the doors with no fitness background.

I’ve heard many times, “I need to get in shape before I can do CrossFit.”

You don’t need to be in shape or fit to take do CrossFit.

You just need to show up, and keep showing up consistently enough to get better each day.

Don’t get me wrong, you can catch me breathing heavy and collecting myself after a workout, but that is not the only metric for how effective a workout was.

We’re chasing the threshold between challenge in a workout and our current capacity.

I would much rather have people leave class thinking they could have done more, and come back the next day, as opposed to going full send and feeling wrecked for the next few days.

You can earn your intensity, and play the long game.

After recording thousands of workouts at this stage, there are days and workouts that don’t get me excited. They are usually the ones I know will challenge me most or highlight an area I need to improve.

This is ok. It’s where we get to work on our mindset of leaning into challenges and doing hard things.

Do I like long distance running, strict pressing overhead, or ring muscle ups? No, but I still show up and see what I’m capable of on those days too because I know they’re doing more for my fitness than the days I love.

The smiles, excitement, and confidence that I’ve witnessed in others when they hit a Personal Record, achieve a new movement, or lift something heavy is something that never gets old.

The stories of things people can do outside the gym or the way they carry themselves because of what they achieve in the gym is what it’s really all about.

Our goal is to create strong individuals that are capable for as long as possible. The more capable you are in life, the more independent you will be.

We want more people feeling strong!

Looking to level up your overhead squat?

Here are some tips that can help you with your stance and grip, as well as the positions we want to find throughout the movement.

We think it’s one of the hardest squat variations in CrossFit, and can also be a great way to build physical skills like balance, mobility, coordination, and strength.

How would you describe the overhead squat?
