CAVS BLOW BIG LEAD AND LOSE OPENER

Tyrese Maxey scored 32 points and Joel Embiid had 24 to help LeBron James and the Philadelphia 76ers wipe out a 29-point deficit in their home opener and stun the Cleveland Cavaliers 114-106 on Thursday night.

James had 17 points and 10 rebounds in the biggest comeback win of his career, and fellow newcomer Jaylen Brown had 21 points in game that already may be tough for the Sixers to top this season, which they’ve started with wins over the NBA champion Knicks and the Eastern Conference finalist Cavaliers.

Donovan Mitchell scored 32 points for the Cavs in their season opener.

The Sixers missed 11 of 15 3-pointers and had 14 turnovers (only 12 total against the Knicks) in the first half and the packed house erupted in boos late in the second period.

Mitchell scored 22 points in the first half as the Cavaliers stretched their lead to 29 points.

The Cavs got outscored by 16 points in both the third and fourth quarters.

Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin is out “indefinitely” with an injury to his throwing arm, coach Ryan Day announced Tuesday.

Day declined to put a timeline on Sayin’s recovery but said the Buckeyes are planning to move forward without him through the rest of the year, including the postseason.

True freshman Luke Fahey has been the No. 2 quarterback this season, but Day said sophomore Tavien St. Clair would also get snaps with the first team this week.

Ohio State has a bye this weekend before traveling to No. 19 USC on Oct. 31.

“We’re going to play the guy that gives us the best chance to win,” Day said. “Going into the last few games, Luke’s been ahead of Tavien in terms of what we’ve seen, but now that we have a bye week, these guys are both going to get a lot of reps, and we’re going to start to put together a plan on how we’re going to move forward. We’re going to play the guy that gives us the best chance to win.”

Sayin injured his right arm in the fourth quarter Saturday during Ohio State’s 19-15 victory at No. 5 Indiana, when Mario Landino hit his right shoulder while sacking him and forcing a fumble. Sayin later emerged from the locker room with his arm in a sling.

Sayin was a Heisman finalist last year in his first season as the starter.

This year, he’s completing 71.2% of his passes for 1,772 yards. He also has thrown 17 touchdowns with just two interceptions.

CLEVELAND'S SEASON ENDS WITH GAME 6 LOSS

Freddy Peralta threw 5 1/3 gritty innings, Junior Caminero and Yandy Díaz each hit a two-run homer and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Cleveland Guardians 7-3 in Game 6 of the American League Championship Series on Monday night to advance to the World Series for the third time in the franchise’s 29 seasons.

The Guardians couldn’t produce clutch, game-shifting hits over the final three games of the series — and it cost them. On Monday, they went 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position and left nine runners on base, squandering opportunities to score after falling behind. Their best chance arose in the eighth when they loaded the bases with consecutive walks and a hit by pitch with two outs for Brayan Rocchio. Kevin Kelly, summoned to face Rocchio after Cleveland scored two runs in the inning, struck Rocchio out on three pitches. In the end, Cleveland scored seven runs over the final three games — all losses — and their World Series title drought extends to 78 years as a result.

The Rays will face the Milwaukee Brewers in the first matchup in which both teams are seeking their first World Series title since 1980, when the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Kansas City Royals.

Game 1 is Friday night in Milwaukee.

The loss extended Cleveland’s World Series championship drought to 78 years.

DEFENSE DOMINATES IN BROWN WIN

Deshaun Watson shook off three quarters of ineffective play to connect with Jerry Jeudy for a 33-yard gain that set up Andre Szmyt’s 37-yard field goal on the final snap, and the Browns rallied past the Baltimore Ravens 13-10 on Sunday.

The Browns (4-2) trailed 10-0 early and had all of 107 yards entering the fourth quarter before a late fumble by Baltimore’s Derrick Henry shifted the momentum to set the stage for their latest and perhaps most impressive — in results if not in process — victory so far.

Cleveland needed every one of those 60 minutes and one untimed down to give Monken — who spent the previous three seasons as the Ravens’ offensive coordinator — an improbable victory over some familiar faces.

Watson completed 16 of 26 passes for 164 yards. Szmyt’s game-winner atoned for a miss from 48 yards a few minutes earlier.

The Ravens (4-2) blocked Szmyt’s first attempt to win it but were called for offside. Szmyt’s try from 5 yards closer was down the middle to pull the surprising Browns into a tie with Baltimore and Pittsburgh atop the AFC North, with two of those victories coming at home on last-second kicks against division rivals.

Despite missing quarterback Lamar Jackson — out for a second straight game with an ankle injury — the Ravens appeared in firm control against an inept Browns offense, but linebacker Carson Schwesinger provided the spark the Browns needed when he knocked the ball out of Henry’s hands. Defensive back Tyson Campbell fell on it at the Baltimore 35.

Suddenly, the Browns had life. Audric Estime, plucked from Minnesota’s practice squad this week with starting running back Quinshon Judkins sidelined by an ankle injury, bulled his way in for a 2-yard touchdown to tie the game at 10-all with 8:33 remaining.

Ravens backup quarterback Tyler Huntley, who played brilliantly in an overtime win over Atlanta last Sunday, and the rest of the Baltimore offense had two chances to take the lead but failed to produce a first down either time.

GUARDIANS SEASON ON THE BRINK WITH GAME 5 LOSS

Drew Rasmussen allowed one run over seven innings for his second postseason win, Tampa Bay’s offense kept on constant pressure and the Rays beat the Cleveland Guardians 3-1 to take a 3-2 lead in the AL Championship Series. The Rays will try to capture their third AL pennant and first since 2020 on Monday at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Since the LCS expanded to seven games in 1985, road teams winning Game 5 for a 3-2 lead have won the series four of five times. Game 7 if needed would be Tuesday. The World Series starts Friday at NL champion Milwaukee.

Cleveland managed just five hits, two by Steven Kwan, with the only offense and rbi ground out from Chase DeLauter.

Gavin Williams will start Game 6 Monday night.
