BROWNS KEEP QB GREEN AND PUT GABRIEL ON IR

The Cleveland Browns on Sunday trimmed their roster from four quarterbacks to three ahead of the NFL's cut-down deadline at 6 p.m. ET but did so without cutting or trading a passer.

Instead, Cleveland placed Dillon Gabriel on injured reserve and designated him to return with a back injury. The Browns will carry Deshaun Watson, Shedeur Sanders and rookie Taylen Green as the quarterbacks on their initial 53-man roster.

Gabriel injured his back in Cleveland's preseason-closing win against the New England Patriots on Thursday night, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Gabriel had pain Saturday and underwent an MRI. He will be eligible to return after the first four games of the regular season.

GUARDIANS AVOID SWEEP WITH BLOWOUT WIN

José Ramírez homered at home for the first time since May while Parker Messick struck out five and gave up one run in six innings to lead the Cleveland Guardians past the Kansas City Royals 11-1 on Sunday.

After a 30-minute weather delay, Ramírez opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly that tied the game at 1 before Nathaniel Lowe sent his 15th homer of the season over the left-center field wall for a 3-1 Cleveland lead.

Jo Adell hit a two-run double in the third, and Lowe added an RBI sacrifice fly.

Chase DeLauter finished 4 for 4, his third career four-hit game, which included an RBI double in the fourth inning, and Adell capped the scoring with a one-run single in the sixth to help the Guardians avoid a series sweep.

Messick (11-8) allowed five hits. Tim Herrin, Hunter Gaddis and Cade Smith combined for two hits to close out the game.

PRESEASON OVER FOR BROWNS AFTER NE WIN

The Browns capped off the preseason with a 37-13 win over the Patriots in a matchup that featured a number of young players fighting to earn a spot on the Browns' 53-man roster.

They also had the chance to particularly evaluate QB Dillon Gabriel in the first half of the game and rookie QB Taylen Green in the second half, in order to see valuable game reps of each young quarterback.
In the first half against the Patriots, QB Dillon Gabriel led the Browns' offense down the field and into scoring position on his five full offensive drives.

They meticulously used the run and pass game to move the chains, and Gabriel connected with multiple receivers on gains to put the Browns into scoring position – including a 12-yard reception to WR Gage Larvadain. Gabriel capped off the opening drive with a 6-yard touchdown pass to WR Luke Floriea before connecting with Floriea again on the second drive for a 14-yard touchdown pass.

The Browns' defense made key plays over the course of the game, closing out the first quarter with an interception by LB Easton Mascarenas-Arnold and keeping New England scoreless in the second half of the game.

The Patriots were forced to punt on their first three offensive drives of the second half before rookie QB Behren Morton was intercepted by rookie LB Justin Jefferson late in the fourth quarter for the second turnover of the game.

BROWNS TALK ABOUT FINAL PRESEASON GAME

The Browns will round out the preseason with one final game when they host the Patriots on Thursday Night Football on Aug. 27.

Head coach Todd Monken said their starters will not play in the preseason finale, including starting QB Deshaun Watson.

"I talked to Coach (Mike) Vrabel, we had talked about initially wanting to play our starters and get them a series or two," Monken said on Aug. 24. "They really hadn't played their guys. But we both felt like we were thin, especially up front on both sides of the ball, and we just felt like we'd be better off not playing our starters in the game Thursday night."

QB Shedeur Sanders, who will serve as the backup quarterback in Week 1 of the regular season, will also not play in the third preseason game. Monken said they will play both QB Dillon Gabriel and rookie QB Taylen Green against the Patriots.

"We're not playing them because we'd like to see Dillon (Gabriel) more," Monken explained. "It worked out last game, that was unfair to him. So, in order to do that, to see more of him and see Taylen (Green), there's just not enough reps. That's the reason, there's really nothing else. Just trying to see Taylen after he played pretty well in the limited reps he had against the Bills, and we want to see more of Dillon. It just hasn't worked out trying to get those other guys reps. That's the reason."

CLEVELAND WINS IN 9TH

Steven Kwan hit a tying double in the ninth inning, Travis Bazzana followed with a sacrifice fly and the Cleveland Guardians rallied past the Los Angeles Angels 4-3 on Wednesday for their seventh straight victory.

Hunter Gaddis (2-3) retired the final two batters in the eighth to earn the win. Erik Sabrowski worked a scoreless ninth for his second major league save and first since 2024.

With a runner on second, Sabrowski struck out pinch-hitter Travis d’Arnaud and got pinch-hitter Oswald Peraza to pop up to second as Cleveland completed a three-game sweep.

Chase DeLauter, slowed this week by left hamstring tightness, sparked the winning rally with a one-out single off reliever Ryan Watson (1-1) in the ninth.

Petey Halpin ran for DeLauter and went to second on Brayan Rocchio’s single. Kwan roped a ground-rule double to right field for a 3-all tie, and Bazzana's sac fly sent the Angels to their 10th loss this season when leading after eight innings.

Los Angeles starter Grayson Rodriguez gave up one run and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings, striking out four and walking one. Guardians starter Joey Cantillo allowed two hits in six innings but issued a career-high seven walks and committed a first-inning error that led to a run.
