Most women miss the first signs that fat loss is happening because they’re staring at the scale.

The scale is the loudest signal and the slowest. By the time it moves, your body has been changing for 2 to 3 weeks already.

Here’s what to actually watch for:
1. Your rings start spinning. The small joints in your fingers lose fat before your stomach does. Same goes for your watch band sliding around your wrist. If your jewelry feels different, that’s a signal your scale won’t catch for another week or two.
2. You’re randomly thirsty all day. When fat cells release stored fat, they release water with it. Your body flushes it out and your thirst climbs. If you’re suddenly drinking 90 to 100oz without trying, pay attention.
3. You’re waking up before your alarm. Stable blood sugar overnight from eating enough protein (130 to 140g daily, 30 to 40g per meal) means your cortisol cycle resets properly. Deep sleep, natural wake up, no 6am grog.
4. Your lifts go up faster than usual. Fat loss done right preserves muscle, and when you’re properly fueled and running progressive overload, you’ll add 5 to 10 lbs to your big lifts within a few weeks. That’s tissue change you can feel before you see it.
5. The 3pm crash disappears. Protein and fat at every meal keeps your energy flat through the afternoon. If you used to need a coffee at 2:30 and you don’t anymore, your body composition is changing whether the scale shows it yet or not.

When I went from a size 10 to a size 4 in 2020, the scale was always two weeks behind these signals. Once I trusted the signs and stopped panicking when the scale stalled, everything sped up.

Structure beats willpower. And the structure starts with knowing what you actually need to eat.
