ICYMI: NFA Examiners Return To Work
We are happy to report that ASA's diligent work has led to a historical accomplishment! As of Monday morning, NFA examiners are back to work processing consumer transfer forms—the first time this has happened during a government shutdown.
We spoke to contacts within the NFA Division yesterday. Here is what we know:
The entire staff of NFA examiners returned to work Monday morning.
Processing of Forms 2 and 3 began in earnest, along with any Form 4 applications that were submitted to FBI NICS before the shutdown and received an approved background check during the NFA furlough.
Form 4s submitted to the eForms system since October 1 have been submitted to NICS, and as soon as background check approvals begin rolling in, examiners will start approving them.
We do not anticipate any significant increase in transfer times beyond a few days as NFA gets back up to speed.
Some non-processing-related tasks, such as general correspondence, FOIA requests, etc., may not be worked on during the shutdown, since examiners were explicitly authorized to return to work to process NFA transfer forms.

Suppressor Tax Stamp Eliminated: Complete Guide to the 2026 Changes
Published by CMMG Team on Aug 13, 2025 2:00:32 PM
The fi****ms industry witnessed a watershed moment when President Trump signed the “Big Beautiful Bill” on Independence Day 2025. Hidden within this massive bill lies a provision that fundamentally transforms suppressor ownership in America. Beginning January 1, 2026, the decades-old $200 federal excise tax on silencers will vanish entirely.

Suppressor Tax Stamp Eliminated-1-1
What Gets Eliminated
The new law removes the $200 tax requirement for multiple NFA categories:
Suppressors (silencers)
Short-barreled rifles under 16 inches
Short-barreled shotguns under 18 inches
Any Other Weapons (AOW) classifications
What Stays the Same
Federal oversight mechanisms remain intact. Purchasers must still navigate the ATF Form 4 application process and undergo comprehensive background screening. The regulatory framework persists, but the financial barrier disappears.
When Do the Changes Take Place
Critical timing considerations affect your purchase strategy. Any Form 4 applications submitted before January 1, 2026 still require the full $200 payment. The tax elimination only applies to forms processed after the effective date.
How Will this Impact the Market
Economic principles suggest that reducing costs while maintaining product quality drives an increase in demand. Industry analysts predict unprecedented suppressor sales volume once the tax disappears. Historical precedent, from previous fi****ms policy changes, supports this projection.
Smart buyers should prepare for potential inventory shortages on suppressors. Manufacturing capacity may struggle to meet sudden demand spikes, but for CMMG who has invested in machinery to offset any backorder potential we are poised to meet those demands.
ATF Processing Bottlenecks
The Bureau of Alcohol, To***co, Fi****ms and Explosives faces an administrative challenge. Current Form 4 processing times have reached historic lows, but this efficiency may deteriorate rapidly when application volume surges and there’s obvious reason to believe that it will.
Suppressor Tax Stamp Eliminated-2When is the best time to buy?
Well, it really depends, and there are basically three options. For many, option three will be the most logical path forward.
Option One: Buy Now, Pick Up Now
Buyers prioritizing quick possession should consider purchasing now despite the tax requirement. Current ATF approval times favor this approach, potentially delivering your suppressor months before the post-implementation rush begins.
This strategy makes particular sense for hunters preparing for upcoming seasons or competitive shooters needing equipment for scheduled events in the near future.
The $200 investment may prove worthwhile to avoid extended waiting periods. If you want to receive your suppressor fast, now is the time.
Option Two: Buy Later, Pick Up Later
Patient buyers can wait for the tax elimination and save money on each transaction. However, this approach requires accepting potentially much longer approval times and a high likelihood of inventory limitations across the industry.
Consider this path if you plan on buying multiple suppressors or if immediate possession isn't critical for your shooting activities. But know that the likelihood of being able to buy the suppressor you really want, will most certainly be limited.
Option Three: Buy Now, Pick Up Later (The Best of Both Worlds)
Knowing that an increase in demand is almost certainly inevitable, option three might make the most sense if you're wanting to buy a suppressor.
By buying a suppressor now and having it shipped to your local dealer/FFL provider but waiting until after January 1st to pick it up, you get the best of both worlds by being able to buy the suppressor you want while it's still available and still taking advantage of the $200 tax stamp savings.

How You Can Prepare
Document Everything
Maintain meticulous records of all NFA transactions, especially those spanning the implementation date. Tax obligations differ based on application submission timing, not approval dates.
Dealer Relationships
Establish connections with reputable NFA dealers before demand peaks. Experienced dealers provide valuable guidance through the federal transfer process.
Educational Resources
Understanding NFA regulations becomes more important as participation increases. New suppressor owners need proper training in legal compliance, maintenance procedures, and safe usage practices.
Conclusion: A New Era for Suppressor Ownership
The elimination of federal tax stamps marks a pivotal moment in American fi****ms policy. Whether you choose immediate purchase or patient waiting, this change benefits all shooting enthusiasts by reducing barriers to suppressor ownership.
