Derek led the Purple Roses to two consecutive State and Monmouth County Championships. After high school, Derek went to Temple University. As the starting shortstop for Temple in his senior year, he ranked 11th in Division I baseball for doubles (23). Notable highlights also include three major upset victories against no. 5 Louisville, no. 16 Houston, and no. 24 Virginia Tech. In 2014, Derek signed his first professional contract to play baseball for the Baltimore Orioles. Over the next three years, he played for four minor league affiliated teams and two stints overseas in the Australian Baseball League where he is the active hit streak leader (25) consecutive games.
