🐦⚓ DECKHAND DUKE — TEMPORARY RELIEF CAPTAIN?! 🤣

Well folks… old Duke has officially gotten way too comfortable in that first mate’s chair. 😂

After lookout duty, dock lines, bait inventory, safety inspections and a few days riding beside me on the bridge, apparently Duke has decided he’s seen enough to move up again.

This morning I caught him sitting at the helm with one wing on the wheel, headset on, radio clipped to his life jacket and looking like he’d been running sportfishing boats for 30 years. 🤦‍♂️🤣

I said:

“DUKE… WHAT EXACTLY DO YOU THINK YOU’RE DOING?”

He throws one wing up and says:

“Capt, I’ve been observing your technique. I think I’m ready to take a watch.” 😎🐦

I said:

“Duke… you’ve been doing this for THREE DAYS.” 😂

His answer?

“I’m a fast learner, Capt.” 🤣🤣🤣

Then I noticed he had apparently promoted himself again.

Not to manager this time.

Oh no.

Now this bird thinks he’s:

CAPTAIN DUKE — TEMPORARY RELIEF CAPTAIN. 😂🐦⚓

I had to remind him real quick:

No captain’s license.
No captain’s pay.
No captain’s chair.
And absolutely NO touching the throttles. 🤣

He tried to tell me he was just “assisting with navigation.”

I said:

“Duke, get your feathers back in the first mate’s chair before I reopen the Boat Washing Division.” 🪣😂

That got his attention.

Amazing how fast a bird can remember his place when you mention a scrub brush. 🤣

So for now, Capt Greg still has the wheel…

and Duke is back where he belongs:

Right beside me, talking too much, pointing at everything, and giving advice nobody asked for. 😂👊🏼🫡

🐦🦺 DECKHAND DUKE — SAFETY OFFICER HAS GONE TOO FAR! 🤣

Well folks… after yesterday’s bait inventory crime scene, I decided Duke needed a job that did NOT involve food. 😂

So today I put him on pre-trip safety inspection.

I showed him the life jackets, handheld radio, EPIRB, throw ring and emergency gear and told him:

“Duke, just make sure everything is ready to go.”

That was my first mistake. 🤦‍♂️🤣

I come back a little later and apparently Duke has promoted himself to Chief Safety Officer of Wave Dancer Charters.

This bird is sitting in the chair wearing TWO life jackets, carrying a handheld radio, emergency light hanging off him, and looking like he’s prepared to survive a hurricane, shipwreck and Coast Guard inspection all at the same time. 😂😂😂

I said:

“DUKE… WHY ARE YOU WEARING TWO LIFE JACKETS?!”

He looks over at me like I’m the one with the problem and says:

“Redundancy, Capt. Safety first.” 😎🐦

Then I noticed he had inspected the throw ring too.

Now the wooden one hanging at the palapa clearly says:

ANOTHER DAY IN PARADISE

Apparently Duke took that as official emergency equipment. 🤣🤣🤣

I told him:

“Duke, that one is DECORATION!”

His response:

“Capt… in an emergency, I’m using EVERYTHING available.” 😂

Fair enough, I guess.

So according to Duke’s official safety inspection:

✅ Life jackets accounted for
✅ Radio working
✅ EPIRB present
✅ Throw ring ready
✅ Emergency light ready
✅ Duke wearing enough flotation for THREE pelicans
⚠️ Capt Greg’s attitude toward the Safety Department — NEEDS IMPROVEMENT 🤦‍♂️🤣

Yesterday he ate the bait inventory.

Today he’s inspecting MY operation.

This bird somehow learns the wrong lesson from everything. 😂🐦

But I’ll give him this…

If this boat ever sinks while tied up at the dock, Duke is going to be the safest pelican in Galveston. 🤣🤣🤣

🐦🐟 DECKHAND DUKE — THE BAIT INVENTORY CRIME SCENE! 🤣

Well folks… after the dock line disaster, I decided Duke needed a job that matched his natural abilities a little better.

So today I put him in charge of bait inventory.

Simple assignment:

“Duke, count the bait, check the freezer, and make sure we have enough for the next trip.”

What could possibly go wrong? 🤦‍♂️🤣

I leave him alone for a few minutes and come back to what looks like a full-blown crime scene.

Bait boxes open.

Fish everywhere.

Plastic bags ripped up.

Ice scattered across the floor.

And there’s Duke standing right in the middle of it with a baitfish hanging out of his mouth like I caught him red-handed. 😂🐦

I said:

“DUKE… WHAT HAPPENED TO THE BAIT?!”

He looks at me completely innocent and says:

“Quality control, Capt. Had to make sure it was fresh.” 😎🤣

QUALITY CONTROL?!

Duke, you ate half the inventory! 😂😂😂

Apparently his new bait department checklist looks like this:

✅ Count the bait
✅ Inspect the bait
✅ Sample the bait
✅ Sample it again
✅ Make sure the second sample matched the first
❌ Leave any bait for the customers 🤣

And judging by the mess around that freezer, I’m pretty sure Duke’s definition of “inventory management” is:

If it fits in the beak, it’s accounted for. 😂

So after today’s training session, here’s where we stand:

Yesterday he tied himself to the dock.

Today he ate the inventory.

At this rate, First Mate training may take a while. 🤦‍♂️🤣

But I’ll give the little rascal this much…

He finally found a department he’s naturally qualified for. 🐟🐦😂

🐦🪢 DECKHAND DUKE — THE DOCK LINE DISASTER! 🤣

Well folks… today I decided it was time to teach Duke another basic first mate skill:

Dock lines.

I figured after everything this bird has already survived, surely he could handle something simple. 🤦‍♂️🤣

So I showed him the plan:

Spring line on the starboard cleat first.
Then the stern lines.
Then finish securing the boat.

Simple enough, right?

I gave Duke the lines, explained it twice, and walked away for just a few minutes.

That was my mistake. 😂

I came back and found what can only be described as a full-blown rope emergency.

Lines everywhere.

Around the cleat.

Around the piling.

Across the dock.

Under his feet.

Over his wings.

Around his neck.

And somehow old Duke had managed to tie HIMSELF into the middle of the whole mess. 🤣🤣🤣

I just stood there looking at him.

Hands on my hips.

Trying to figure out where the actual knot ended and Duke began. 😂

Finally I asked:

“DUKE… WHAT DID YOU DO?!”

He looks at me with a mouth full of rope and says:

“Secured the vessel, Capt!” 😎🐦🪢

I said:

“Duke… you secured EVERYTHING EXCEPT YOUR DIGNITY.” 🤣🤣🤣

He tried explaining that he was using “multiple redundancy systems.”

I told him that’s a fancy way of saying:

“YOU MADE A MESS.” 😂

So today’s lesson:

✅ Boat secured
✅ Dock secured
✅ Piling secured
✅ Duke secured
❌ Actual dock line procedure understood 🤦‍♂️🤣

I’ll give him credit though…

The boat definitely wasn’t going anywhere.

Neither was Duke. 😂😂😂

At this rate, First Mate training may take a little longer than expected.

But he’s trying.

Sort of.

And as long as he keeps making me laugh, I guess I’ll keep teaching him. 🤣👊🏼🫡

🐦⚓ DECKHAND DUKE — COCKPIT WATCH GONE WRONG! 🤣

Well folks… after yesterday’s offshore lookout duty, I thought maybe Duke was finally settling into this whole “Capt Greg’s sidekick” thing.

Apparently I spoke too soon. 😂

This morning Duke decided he’d had enough of riding up on the bridge listening to me, so he announced he was moving downstairs to the cockpit to “continue surveillance from a quieter location.” 🤣

I told him:

“Fine, Duke. Sit in the chair, keep your eyes open, and stay put.”

Simple instructions.

Or so I thought. 🤦‍♂️😂

A little while later I look back…

EMPTY CHAIR.

No Duke.

So now I’m wondering where this bird has disappeared to.

Then I walk back into the cockpit and THERE HE IS…

standing on top of the gunnel like he owns the boat, staring out across the Gulf. 🐦😎

I said:

“DUKE! THAT IS NOT WHERE I TOLD YOU TO SIT!”

He looks back at me like I’m the unreasonable one and says:

“Capt… the view is WAY better from up here.” 🤣🤣🤣

I tried explaining that being my sidekick does NOT mean he gets to rewrite the job description every fifteen minutes.

His response?

“I’m adapting to changing conditions, Capt.” 😎

Oh brother. 😂

So apparently Duke has learned exactly TWO things from his time in management:

How to make everything sound official…

and how to justify doing whatever he wanted to do in the first place. 🤣

I finally got him down off the gunnel and back where he belonged.

At least temporarily.

Because knowing Duke, I’m pretty sure he’s already looking for a taller perch. 😂🐦

But I’ll give him credit…

He’s staying alert.

He’s staying involved.

And most importantly…

HE HASN’T ASKED FOR HIS MANAGEMENT JOB BACK. 🤣🤣🤣

That’s still progress.

🐦⚓ DECKHAND DUKE — LOOKOUT DUTY GONE WILD! 🤣🌊

Well folks… Duke finally got himself back out of the Boat Washing Division and onto the bridge beside me.

So today I gave him ONE simple job:

“Duke, sit in that first mate’s chair, keep your eyes open, and let me know if you see anything important.”

That was apparently too much responsibility. 🤦‍♂️🤣

We’re offshore in 4’-5’ seas with thunderstorms all around us, and Duke has got the binoculars glued to his face and the two-way radio in his wing like he’s running Gulf Coast Homeland Security. 😂

Every two minutes:

“CAPT! CONTACT OFF THE STARBOARD SIDE!”

I look over…

It’s a shrimp boat. 🤣

Five minutes later:

“CAPT! MOVEMENT AT 2 O’CLOCK!”

Another pelican. 😂

Then:

“CAPT! WEATHER ACTIVITY AHEAD!”

I said, “Duke… I KNOW. I’M LOOKING AT IT.” 🤣🤣🤣

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m glad the little feathered sidekick is taking his new job seriously…

But at this point he has reported:

✅ Boats
✅ Birds
✅ Waves
✅ Clouds
✅ Rain
✅ Lightning
✅ A floating bottle
✅ And something he swears looked “suspicious” that turned out to be seaweed. 🤦‍♂️😂

I finally told him:

“Duke, you don’t have to report EVERYTHING you see.”

He lowered the binoculars, looked over those blue shades and said:

“Capt… you told me to keep watch. I’m keeping watch.” 😎🐦

Fair enough. 😂

So today Duke officially survived his first real day of lookout duty in some rough Gulf conditions.

Did he help?

Yes.

Did he aggravate me?

Also yes. 🤣

But I’ll give him this much…

He stayed in that first mate’s chair, kept his eyes open, and didn’t ask for a management title once.

That’s progress. 😂👊🏼🫡
