Some insight from Juliet Hammer, Climbing Coach after climbing her 110th V8

“110 boulders of this grade and 12 years after my first V8… this climb still felt hard.

And if I let my ego talk, it might sound like:

“If V8 still feels this hard, you haven’t progressed in 12 years” [Not true]

“Other people thought this climb was soft, so you must be weak.” [Not true]

“You’ve already peaked, you’re only getting worse.” [Not true]

But something feeling difficult doesn’t automatically mean regression or stagnation. Something feeling difficult is just information.

This climb challenged me because vert isn’t my forte, and I prefer steep tension climbing.

It forced me into extended positions, when being scrunched is my comfort zone.

I had to trust my feet to move on open-handed holds, when I’d rather bear down and yank on sharp edges.

None of that means what my ego wants me to believe, and if I listened to it, I’d lose out on an opportunity to grow as a climber.

Because progress won’t happen if climbing always feels easy, and it certainly won’t happen if your ego won’t let you be challenged.”
