Justin lost both legs and part of a hand to an IED in Afghanistan. When it was time to rebuild his cardiovascular system, his trainers didn't ask him to move at all — they put a mask on his face and dropped the oxygen in the air he was breathing.
That's Intermittent Hypoxic Exposure (IHE), and it's not just for wounded veterans training for the Invictus Games. Runners are using it to stay fit through stress fractures. Surgery patients are using it to walk into the OR stronger. Even older adults with joints that can't take pounding anymore are using it to keep their engines running.
The research behind it is wild — controlled hypoxia appears to speed up bone healing, improve oxygen delivery to damaged tissue, and even accelerate nerve regeneration. We broke down how it works, who it's actually for, and what a session looks like.
