Altitude training, also known as hypoxic training, involves exercising in, living in or otherwise breathing oxygen reduced air for the purpose of improved athletic performance, pre-acclimatization to altitude and/or physical wellness. Traditionally, individuals had to travel to or live at high elevations to obtain the benefits of this phenomenon. Circa 1995, the patented technology of Hypoxico Inc. eliminated this hardship by allowing high altitude training facilities to be set up anywhere. Through the production of normobaric hypoxic (oxygen reduced) air, we can simulate altitudes of up to 21,000ft/6,400m. As a result, athletes, fitness enthusiasts and health conscious individuals worldwide can take advantage of the benefits associated with altitude training while at sea-level.

Justin lost both legs and part of a hand to an IED in Afghanistan. When it was time to rebuild his cardiovascular system, his trainers didn't ask him to move at all — they put a mask on his face and dropped the oxygen in the air he was breathing.

That's Intermittent Hypoxic Exposure (IHE), and it's not just for wounded veterans training for the Invictus Games. Runners are using it to stay fit through stress fractures. Surgery patients are using it to walk into the OR stronger. Even older adults with joints that can't take pounding anymore are using it to keep their engines running.

The research behind it is wild — controlled hypoxia appears to speed up bone healing, improve oxygen delivery to damaged tissue, and even accelerate nerve regeneration. We broke down how it works, who it's actually for, and what a session looks like.

One important note: interval lengths vary a lot depending on the injury and the research behind it, so this is always something to work out with your doctor or physical therapist first — not a one-size-fits-all script.

He waits until his mom falls asleep, then trains from ten at night until one in the morning. During the day, he's at her side. His mom is on hospice.

A few weeks later, ultrarunner Aaron Kubala won the Tahoe 200 and broke the course record by more than an hour — after doing something he'd never done before: sleeping in a Hypoxico altitude tent, every night, for a month, from a bedroom 400 feet above sea level.

But the record isn't why he was out there. Around mile 170, with the win locked up, he ran twenty miles crying to the playlist he made for his mom's funeral. Every mile of his Triple Crown season points back to Miles for Mom, the fundraiser he and his mom launched together for METAvivor — the only nonprofit in the country funding metastatic breast cancer research exclusively.

Not coming off a record-setting run at Tahoe 200 slowing him down one bit. 🏔️

Congrats to Aaron Kubala on winning the 2026 Bigfoot 200 in 47:21:11 — back-to-back 200-mile wins this summer and now setting his sights on Moab 240 in October to complete the Triple Crown.

Aaron is just a special human. We could not be happier for him. 🙌

Denali. 17,000 feet. And Brandon Bargo slept like it was nothing.

Brandon, you know him from The Highpointers with the Bargo Brothers, is chasing the highest point in every state, faster than anyone in history. Denali was stop one: the coldest, most technical mountain on the whole list.

Here's the part that'll get you (it didn't get us): before he ever touched the mountain, Brandon pre-acclimatized at home, sleeping in a Hypoxico altitude tent for weeks so his body was already up there before he was.

The Tour de France makes the headlines in July, but the real work starts months earlier — at altitude.

A recent The Athletic deep dive showed how many of the race’s top GC contenders now spend weeks in high mountain ranges, living and training between roughly 1,600–2,500m to arrive with boosted aerobic capacity and higher total hemoglobin mass. It’s become such an advantage that some voices in the sport are even asking whether altitude training should be restricted.

The physiology is straightforward: more time in thin air → more red blood cells → better oxygen delivery when the race hits the big climbs day after day. The question isn’t whether altitude works; it’s how you access it.

Simulated altitude systems like Hypoxico let cyclists and endurance athletes tap into the same adaptation pathway at home or in existing training facilities, without relocating entire teams to mountain camps.
