Of course strength is general in many cases. It’s also very specific when it comes to absolutely maximizing or improving specific lifts. Squatting or leg pressing may make your legs stronger in general, but the stronger you get, one may not directly correlate to directly improving the strength of the other.
Why? A few reasons.
Strength in its purest form is a skill. Your body and nervous system develop patterns and sensory over time and repetition that allow you to lift maximally. Your body coordinates itself more efficiently over time after constantly being exposed.
It’s like learning to shoot a basketball or throw a football. If you practice, over time, the movement becomes more efficiently, without thought.
