Your scale is measuring the wrong thing.
A new meta-analysis pooled data from over 1.1 million adults and 83,000 deaths to answer one question: does the amount of muscle you carry predict how long you live?
It does.
Adults with low lean mass had a 42% higher risk of dying from any cause than adults with high lean mass. For men, the number was 56%.
Here's the detail that stopped us: the strongest single predictor in the entire analysis wasn't a fancy body scan. It was a tape measure around the calf. Skinny calves flagged more than double the risk.
The scale can't see any of this. Two people can weigh exactly the same, and the one carrying more muscle is playing a very different long game.
This is why we care more about your strength training than your weight. When we build muscle, we're not chasing a number or a mirror. We're building the thing that carries you through your 70s, 80s, and 90s.
Muscle is life insurance. You can't buy it. You can only build it.
At Functional Fitness, this is the whole point — every squat, every deadlift, every rep is an investment in the version of you that's still strong and capable decades from now.
