Four years ago, the leadership of the Mogadishu Mile Kentucky set a goal: visit the gravesites and or memorials of all 19 men killed during the battle of Mogadishu. On July 2, 2026, we completed that mission. This has been a true journey. What we learned along the way and discovered was something most people never get to experience, which was learning a little more about each man we were honoring. They each had a life, a family, hopes and dreams and a commitment to serving something greater than themselves.
On July 2, 2026, Mogadishu Mile Kentucky Director Samuel Deeds completed this four year journey by visiting the gravesite of Staff Sergeant Daniel Busch at Welsh Church Cemetery in Columbia County, Wisconsin. A Mogadishu Mile Kentucky coin was left at his gravesite in honor and respect of his sacrifice.
The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Silver Star Medal (Posthumously) to Daniel Busch, Staff Sergeant, U.S. Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against hostile enemy forces while serving with the 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment - Delta, Task Force RANGER, Special Operations Command, during combat operations in Mogadishu, Somalia, on 3 and 4 October 1993.
On that date while gallantly defending the crew of a downed MH-60 Black Hawk helicopter against a numerically superior enemy force, Staff Sergeant Busch was mortally wounded. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military forces, and reflect great credit upon himself, the Special Operations Command, and the United States Army.
Rest in peace brother. You and the other 18 are not forgotten.
