Squatting is one of the best movements we can do for lifelong mobility, but hitting the right depth consistently can be tricky.
Using a wall ball or box as a target behind you is one of our favorite coaching tools to keep your squats honest and your joints happy.
Here is why we use this setup in the gym:
- Consistent depth: It takes away the guesswork. You know exactly where the bottom of your squat is on every single rep.
- Active tension: The goal is to lightly graze the target, not sit on it. This keeps your legs working and your core engaged.
- Joint safety: Hitting a reliable depth keeps you from collapsing at the bottom, protecting your lower back and knees as you build strength.
Whether you're working on empty-barbell mechanics or building up your front squat, using a target is a smart, scalable way to train.
