In the Daily Star July 22-23 Weekend Edition .... Congratulations to Christine Eromenok and James McDonald for getting a "Cheer" on page C3 (Opinion page) for their efforts to return equestrian activities to the former polo grounds in Gilbertsville! Here's the text: Cheers "To the return of horses to the former polo grounds in Gilbertsville. Christine Eromenok and James McDonald are behind the effort to return horses, but not polo, to the former Village Farms Polo Club, which hosted matches from 1977 to 1990 run by world-class polo player George Herbert "Pete" Bostwick. More than 60 horses came from a 75-mile radius to participate in the July 16 Gilbertsville Horse Show. “It’s a wonderful show, very unique. Riders don’t often get to compete on grass, said Ray Whelihan, a member of the equine studies faculty at New York State University College of Agriculture and Technology in Cobleskill, who served as a judge. "James and Christine are such good horse people. They pay attention to nuances, and competitors appreciate that.”
In preparation for next weekends adventure at Morgan Equine show, I stumbled upon this link to Megan Stapley photography page where I saw many great photos of Jacki, Hailey, Andrew, Sam, Eowyn, and Annie from the 2016 show. I thought I would share.

Words of wisdom..

The creation and installation of confidence, that enables this first photo to perhaps later become the second, will usually have many bumps along the way, false starts, snags, mishaps, even injuries and downright failures.

Life is rarely an Uncle Walt (Walt Disney or Walter Farley) tale of triumph over all odds. More often the Black will get caught in wire, hurt a tendon, just before the big race.

Or the kid will fall off the mustang that she trained in the moonlight, and break her arm, days before the Makeover.

But for the first kid to become the second, the damage will have to be healed, confidence slowly regained, perhaps a better horse-rider match found, because we need to constantly remember and refer to Jack LeGoff's famous formula about this entire process:

Which is---(post this on your refrigerator door where you will read it every single day)

"Boldness comes from confidence. Confidence comes from success. It is therefore the job of the trainer (of horse and rider) to create many situations that virtually guarantee success.)

One of the nice young horses at the farm. This is Leo, a coming 4 yr old, just being backed. Showing a very kind and sensible disposition.

Thank you ABC dream team for cleaning and maintaining the indoor arena! Many hands make light work.

Tamarack Hill Farm would be proud to know that our January / February "ladies night" series has focused on trot poles building up to gymnastics. Exercises have been laid out with a tape measurer in hand with guidance from Reiner Klimke's book "Cavelleti".

Something that I have found to be true, year in, year out----

Riders who jump, which would include jumper riders, hunter riders, event riders, spend thousands of dollars a year on horse board, hundreds of dollars a year on lessons, thousands of dollars a year on tack and equipment, hundreds, perhaps thousands on entry fees---Lots and lots of dollars.

These riders talk about riding and jumping, They read about riding and jumping. They are to one degree or another obsessed with riding and jumping----

Where am I going with this?

So, if a trainer randomly asked most of these riders who spend so much time, money, passion every year to do some simple, basic task, like go into the ring and set some trotting poles, followed, say, by a gymnastic bounce, many of them---I won't say most, although I actually suspect it would be most---would not know the correct spacing of the poles, or the jumps, and, if by chance they did, would not be able to accurately walk the distances to place the poles correctly.

Now, if this does not apply to you, great---You are not to whom it is addressed.

But if you are not able to do this, does it even occur to you to ask why not?

How is it possible that you are so poorly educated that you can't do something so fundamental and basic?

Seriously---Aren't you appalled at this degree of ignorance? Because you should be----

We had a productive weekend riding thanks the hard work and help of Hailey Cappiello. Lucky to have such nice mares in the barn; Zanna - Caitlin Sittler and Willow - Dianna Gale Brown ... plus several other green prospects.

Winning Memories

We have all accomplished so much over a short 5 years.

Follow the US team at The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials! This is Doug Payne, an excellent example of a balanced position and an uphill horse showing impulsion (note how much higher his wither is compared to his croup).

Go for a walk!

Secret training method---pays huge dividends----requires no special equipment---needs no great riding skills---misunderstood by thousands-----

Go take your horse for a walk. Long, hilly walks are better than short flat walks, but any walk is better than standing in a field all day, or, god forbid, in a stall.

Why?

Exercise without fear of injury----"You can`t hurt a horse at a walk."

Exercise is the ONLY way to turn a blob into an athlete. (Other than by the Dionne Warwick method)

Walking soothes the soul, yours and your horse`s. (Unless you live in a traffic red zone.)

Active walking---not strolling---for an hour is real work. Don`t think so? YOU go walk actively for an hour.

Walking fitness, over time, builds muscle and tone, and it builds in resistance to injury as we up the ante into later, more rigorous work.

So---instead of dubbing around at the barn, get your tack, put it on your horse, and go walking. And like they say about voting, vote early and often, So walk early (or late) and often, but go do it.

(The Dionne Warwick school of training? "Wishin` and hopin` and dreamin` and prayin")

Another championship on the books at the NYS Fair Dessage show. Thank you CNY Dressage and Combined Training Association for hosting! Congrats to Melissa Wightman Osborne and Lenny in their solid rides at First Level 3 and Second Level 1 Test.

Chensego Pointed Hunter Show
Schooling Jumpers and Derby!

Yesterday we were blessed with good weather after a very wet spring. We moved the CT and dressage show over to Mill Street Stables since hay isn't fully off the polo field yet. Our front arena transformed into a very nice dressage venue where we hosted Intro - 4th level dressage. One of our hay fields became a good location for our jumping arena. This field was likely happy to be revitalized to a site for horse sport as it had been one of a polo practice fields in the 1970's-1980's when the Bostwick's owned the property. Here are some pictures of yesterday.. please post more if you have them! Thank you to all our hard working staff, volunteers and dressage judge Val McCloskey.
