Oregon has officially made girls wrestling a sport.
What does this mean? More money for tournaments, more opportunities, and hopefully better recognition.

When a girl takes to the mat in the winter of 2023-24, it will be as a member of the Oregon School Activities Associations’ newest official sport. While girls have been wrestling in Oregon for a long time, the OSAA’s delegate assembly met on Monday morning and voted to make the sport its own official activity in the state’s lineup.
Prior to Monday’s meeting, OSAA Executive Director Peter Weber said that adding girls wrestling as its own sport was mostly a formality. He said that wrestling teams tend to operate similar to track and field teams, where some of the state’s teams are operated by one person who oversees both the boys and girls teams, but some schools have two coaches that oversee just one.
Adding girls wrestling as its own allows schools to operate their girls wrestling team as a completely separate entity if they choose.
