Western Plains Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is Gillette's largest and longest established Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training academy in Gillette. Hope to see you all soon!

Western Plains Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu provides precision instruction of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, clean facilities, and an excellent environment and community to train and grow for all ages and skill levels. We began in 2013 with small handful of students and have consistently grown year after year. We are a Gracie style Jiu-Jitsu school teaching both self defense and sports Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, with a direct lineage to Grandmaster Helio Gracie. With this lineage, we have access not only to our local instructors, but also a deep stable of additional instructors from all areas of the U.S. that frequent our school for additional perspectives and training. Seminars are common with WPBJJ to provide a deeper understanding of techniques and concepts. In addition to being an ever growing academy, WPBJJ also hosts the largest Brazilian Gi and No-Gi Tournament in the area every fall, the Western Plains Open. Schools from around the region attend this event to test their skills against other students and lift up the entire sport as a whole. We are located 900 EZ Street in a brand new facility. This training facility features almost 1600 square feet of seamless mat space. Our primary instructor, Professor Miles Fortner started his training while attending the University of Wyoming in 2007, eventually earning his blue belt in 2009. Miles continued his training under Jose Reyes and earned his purple belt in 2012 while attending chiropractic school in Dallas, Texas. Miles was awarded his brown belt in 2016. On August 15, 2021, Miles was promoted to Black Belt by Professor Robert Wunderlich. Lineage: Helio Gracie > Carlos Gracie Jr. > Rigan Machado > Dave Ruiz > Robert Wunderlich > Miles Fortner

A huge congratulations to each of these young athletes! Thank you to everyone who came out to support them as they build confidence, develop lifelong skills, and continue growing on the mat.

Kids are always welcome and highly encouraged to attend Open Mat every Saturday at 11:00 a.m. It’s an incredible opportunity to get extra rounds, sharpen their skills, and accelerate their growth.

Not every memorable day at WPBJJ happens on the mats!

Recently, WPBJJ purple belt and Gillette Police Department Detective Vavi Domingo brought out the department’s BearCat for our Kids and Youth classes to check out.

Vavi, who also serves as a member of GPD’s Special Response Team, gave the kids an opportunity to climb inside, check out the vehicle, ask questions, and spend some time getting to better know the officers who serve their community.

It was a pretty awesome experience for the kids, but even more importantly, it was a chance to build connections.

One of the things we love about Jiu Jitsu is the community it creates. The people we train alongside every week come from all walks of life, and sometimes those relationships give our students opportunities to experience something completely outside the walls of the academy.

A huge thank you to Vavi and the Gillette Police Department for taking the time to hang out with our kids and make this happen!

And yes... the BearCat was as cool as it looks.

With the kids back to school and the temperatures finally retreating, summer is drawing to a close. And with it, WPBJJ’s Summer Seminar Series wraps up.

This summer, we had the privilege of welcoming Jiu Jitsu academies from across Wyoming, South Dakota, and the surrounding regions. Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make these seminars such a success. It was an incredible opportunity to learn, grow, and share the mats together through the sport we all love!

A special thank you to Professor .lovato.sr , Professor Ben Lozano , and Professor for sharing their time, knowledge, and experience with us this summer. Each brought something unique to our community, and we are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to learn from each of you.

While this summer’s seminar series has come to an end, future events are on the horizon! We are excited to continue bringing incredible opportunities to learn, train, grow, and build this amazing Jiu Jitsu community together.

What an outstanding seminar!

A huge thank you to Dean Lister for sharing his knowledge, experience, and techniques with us. It was an incredible opportunity to learn from one of the best!

We also want to thank everyone who came out and shared the mats with us. We had an amazing turnout, with friends joining us from gyms across Wyoming and even traveling from out of state. We truly appreciate everyone who made the trip and helped make this such a memorable event.

Safe travels home to everyone who came from afar!
