The core is the foundation for your movements. It enables mobility in the upper & lower body as well as stabilizing the spine, ribcage & pelvis against the stress of those movements.

Benefits of Core Training

1.) Improved Posture
2.) Increased protection & "bracing" of your back
3.) Greater balance & coordination
4.) Greater power & speed

Here is a great book on Core Training that explains the importance and function of the core with many detailed & creative exercises. It's been very helpful with training my clients.

If you are an avid exerciser, but are not seeing the results you want, it is likely due to diet.

Did you ever wonder why we have been told for years by "experts" & doctors to eat less fat, but Americans continue to get fatter and have more heart disease & type 2 diabetes?

It's because eating healthy fat does NOT cause weight gain or heart disease. The culprit is SUGAR. Much research has been done that shows sugar & refined carbs are the true cause of obesity, heart disease, & type 2 diabetes.

Fat calories speed up your metabolism and do not spike insulin - the fat storage hormone. On the other hand, sugar & refined carbs do the exact opposite. They spike insulin & promote fat storage, especially around the middle also known as dangerous belly fat. They also slow your metabolism and increase hunger & cravings. Thus the vicious cycle many people are on.

I know two people that have recently cut out sugar and refined carbs from their diets. They have both lost significant amounts of weight while gaining strength due to consistent workouts and proper diet. They also feel and look much healthier!

A good book to read to get a better understanding of this concept is "Eat Fat, Get Thin" by Dr. Mark Hyman, MD. He explains how the whole "low fat" thing started and why it is incorrect.

Bottom line: Based on much scientific research the evidence shows that refined, processed carbs make you fat, while fat makes you thin!

Myth: Muscle turns into fat when you stop weight or strength training.

Truth: Muscle & fat are two different tissues and are not interchangeable.

When strength training is stopped, the muscle cells start to shrink and your muscle losses mass. With less physical activity, there is less calorie burn and fat cells start to expand making the body look softer & less toned.

If you want to look fit and toned continue to do strength training. This is an effective, easy exercise called the standing single leg extension. No weights necessary.

Congratulations to my client and friend, Deirdre Tindall, who has lost 44 pounds since 9/21/20! Through consistent exercise and proper nutrition she reduced her body fat from 40.5% to 23.8%! It was not easy, but since she was committed and held herself accountable, she was able to accomplish this huge goal. Yay Deirdre - YOU GO GIRL!!!😀💪

Myth: Women think weight lifting will make them bulky.
Truth: Weight lifting actually creates a leaner, more toned physique - not a bulky one

Today's exercise is an Overhead Tricep Extension to tone the back of the arms - tricep muscle

If you want to increase strength & build muscle, weight lifting should definitely be part of your workout routine.
I've been lifting weights for over 20 years & I can absolutely help you with a weight lifting exercsie program. Also, I am not bulky!

Today's exercise is a Reverse Lunge with a Bicep Curl. It works lower and upper body muscles at the same time. Do ten on each leg for a total of twenty lunges. Try to aim for 30 minutes a day of moderate to intense exercise. If you need some motivation and accountabailty I can help with my virtual training! www.mschindlerfitness.com

- Today I'm doing a Squat with a knee up to a side twist. It works the lower body plus the core especially the obliques. I use a 10lb dumbbell, but it can be done without any weight or a heavier dumbbell. Do 20 total since it involves alternating legs and adds an extra challenge. Remember, if it doesn't CHALLENGE you, it doesn't CHANGE you!
