A message from Miss Janelle…
As I take a minute to reflect on year 10 as owner/director of New Steps, I have so many emotions. This journey started for me at the age of 5 when my parents signed me up for dance classes at New Steps.
Shortly after beginning to dance, I had a BIG dream to one day own a dance studio. I know people around me growing up did not take me seriously when I would say “I want to own a dance studio”. Honestly, I didn’t believe it either, but I always kept the dream alive. When the opportunity came, I turned it down. My husband and I just had our second baby, bought a house and his long hours at work didn’t leave much time for me to be running a business with two young children.
At the very last minute I changed my mind. I told myself I would rather take the chance and be ok with it if it didn’t work out than not doing it and always wondering, what if I took the chance. Where would New Steps be? My first year we had 33 students. We now have 150+ students. The beginning years were rough and there were many times I wanted to quit. When the pandemic hit, I never felt so defeated. Creating our Keep Dancing line of apparel & accessories was a way to motivate myself and others to keep going even though times were tough.
Not only has the studio grown in students, but we have grown in so many ways. We have our beautiful space at 31 Concord Street. A faculty that is the best of the best! The ladies that are on this journey with me are my pillars. They are New Steps pillars. They keep it standing week after week with their dedication, love for dance, time and energy. They understand what New Steps is, who we are and the values we stand by. Without the faculty I have, New Steps would not be where it is today.
Miss Tracy and Miss Tammy founded New Steps over 40 years ago, and the incredible foundation they built gave me the opportunity to continue growing it. It’s a joy to see so many former students bring their kids to New Steps. We really are a very special dance family! We do not participate in competition. It is not who we are. We dance for the love of dance, we dance for the audience, to perform, to entertain and most importantly, we dance because we LOVE to dance. We do not dance for a trophy. This mindset is what Miss Tammy started, Miss Tracy continued and we now have an amazing faculty who helps me continue growing the New Steps style of dance!
As I looked out into the audience at my very first recital as owner/director, we didn’t even fill the first section of the auditorium. For the past 2 years we have been SOLD OUT! A goal I set for myself when I looked out that very first year. Later this month I will be presenting a Glastonbury High School graduating senior with our very first $500 Keep Dancing Scholarship. Another goal I set for myself and another reminder, hard work really does pay off.
The years at New Steps get busier right alongside my kids, who are growing up and becoming busier with their own activities too. I may have taken a step back from teaching regularly scheduled classes and will continue to do so. This will allow me to be a present mom for my boys. Without the faculty I have, this balancing act of running a business and being a mom I want to be, would not be possible.
How blessed I know I am for the life I get to live I remind myself what I had to do in those very early years to get to this place. I didn’t know what year 10 would look like but I have to say it’s pretty awesome! I look forward to watching the continuous growth of New Steps and will always be thankful to everyone who helped me get New Steps to where it is today.
Before I end, I need to say a very special thank you to Miss Lauren, dancers: Lilly Claire Hampshire, Madison Jeski, and Camille Pape, and Miss Alyssa, Miss Dani along with the faculty who created an ultimate surprise for me with the extra dance in the recital to honor my 10th year. It is hard to surprise me, and they pulled it off flawlessly without me knowing ANYTHING! I was in awe and felt so much love and appreciation. To be honored in such a beautiful way with the art of dance is something I will never forget. The moment, these dancers, Miss Lauren and everyone involved will always hold a very special place in my heart.
I hope all the dancers are feeling well rested and ready to start another dance year! If we don’t see you this spring and summer, I hope we see you next dance year!
As always, thank you dance parents for trusting New Steps to teach your child(ren) dance over all of these amazing years!
With love and many thanks,
Miss Janelle
