Thank you, Women's Business Development Council (WBDC)!
A grant is rarely just a check. It can be expanded space, new opportunities, a stronger business, and an owner who can finally see a sustainable future within reach.
With the support of a WBDC grant, Katie grew Royce Gracie Academy’s membership by nearly 40%, made critical investments, and moved closer to becoming a full-time business owner. WBDC’s impact went far beyond funding. Through business guidance, counseling, and trusted support, Katie gained the tools and confidence to make key decisions and build toward a more sustainable future.
This is the ripple effect of giving: when women entrepreneurs have access to resources and support, entire communities grow stronger.

Training takedowns are important. Learning to work together is priceless. We not only teach self-defense, but help kids learn that working together and helping each other grow is more important than always being number one.

🥋🔥 **Why Takedowns Matter for Real Self-Defense** 🔥🥋
When people think “self-defense,” they often picture punches, kicks, and wild exchanges… 👊💥
But in real life, throwing punches can create BIG problems:
⚖️ You may seriously injure someone
⚖️ You may look like the aggressor
⚖️ You may face criminal or civil consequences
⚖️ One bad punch can change lives forever
That’s why Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is so powerful for self-defense. ✅
The goal is NOT to “beat someone up.”
The goal is to **control the situation**.
And one of the best ways to do that is simple:
🚨 **Take them down. Get on top. Control them. End the threat.** 🚨
Most untrained people have no idea how to stop a clean takedown. They don’t know how to sprawl. They don’t understand balance. They don’t know how to frame, recover guard, escape mount, or get back to their feet. Once they’re on the ground with someone trained on top of them, they usually panic. 😳
That’s where BJJ shines. 🥋
You can dominate position without throwing a single punch:
✅ Clinch control
✅ Body locks
✅ Trips
✅ Double legs
✅ Single legs
✅ Mount control
✅ Knee-on-belly control
✅ Back control
✅ Pins and pressure
✅ Safe restraint until help arrives
No ego. No rage. No unnecessary damage.
Just calm, controlled self-defense. 🧠💪
Punching someone in the face may feel “effective,” but legally and morally, control is usually a much better answer. If you can stop the threat without causing serious injury, that can matter a lot when explaining your actions later. ⚖️
BJJ gives you options.
You don’t have to knock someone out.
You don’t have to smash their face.
You don’t have to trade punches in a parking lot.
You can take them down, stay on top, protect yourself, and control the outcome. 🔒
That is real confidence.
Not “I can hurt people.”
But “I can protect myself without losing control.” 🙏
Train takedowns. Train control. Train escapes. Train under pressure.
Because when self-defense gets real, the person who controls the distance, the clinch, the takedown, and the top position usually controls the fight. 🥋🔥
**Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: control first, damage last.**
