Born in Kumamoto, Japan, Takayuki Kubota began studying martial arts at the age of four under the direction of his father, Denjiro Kubota. Because of his insatiable desire to learn every aspect of the arts, he trained daily and studied several different styles of martial arts. Despite his restrictive scholastic program and grueling training schedules, he managed to complement his martial arts trai

Thank you to those of you from the IKA Karate family who have submitted some memories of Soke Tak Kubota for the book project that I am working on... Please feel free to continue to submit them according to previously posted parameters to [email protected] . The writing is going well . OSU !!!
This was the last Kata made by Soke Kubota within a year of his death, named after the glowing ocean tides of his hometown in Kumamoto, Japan. The oizukis are purposely done one long step, two short steps, and one long step.

From Kyoshi Michael Berger on his book project:
Dear IKA Family Member,
I am writing to you in the sorrowful wake of the passing of our great Master, mentor, and friend, Soke Takayuki Kubota. It is with a heavy heart that I express my shared heartfelt grief and condolences to all of our IKA members. It is a tremendous loss, not only to the world of martial arts, but to his family and to the worldwide network of tens of thousands of students and friends that he has so profoundly influenced over decades.
Several years ago, at the personal request of Soke Kubota, I interviewed him and recorded the hours and hours of interviews required in order to write a book about his life. I began the book and completed a portion of it, with the enthusiastic approval by Soke for the portions I had written.
Now, I am re-dedicating myself to the completion of the book that Soke asked me write about him; to honor him and to help preserve his legacy.
Rather than the narrative style biography, I would like to alter the format slightly to include transcribed portions of the recorded interviews together with selected memories of some of the IKA students and friends that Soke had so profoundly impacted in such a meaningful way.
I am asking for your submissions of memories from personal experiences, training, life lessons, etc., for consideration to be included in the book. Obviously, not all submissions can be included, but a select few may be included, likely at the ends of some chapters, or perhaps in a special section at the end of the book- wherever it is fitting with the content of the book.
If you would like to make a submission, please limit it to about 500-750 words maximum (one page or so, 12 point single spaced) and send it to my attention at
[email protected]
Sincerely,
Kyoshi Mike Berger, IKA
Added one of Soke's old belts to complete his karate gi at the Martial Arts History Museum in Glendale, California
Thank you so much for the outpouring of support worldwide as we say good bye to our teacher, friend, and father figure Soke Kubota. He is greatly missed and continues to live through our karate training. Thank you to all the students and sensei’s from past and present that came out to Los Angeles this past weekend to give our final tributes and goodbyes to Soke. The two day service was accompanied by two days of training which would have made Soke happy to celebrate his life through karate. The amount of positive energy that was shared in the dojo during the many training sessions we had over the past several days showed that Soke Kubota is still with us and looking over us from that dojo above.
Thank you for all your continued support and encouragement that will keep Soke’s legacy through the IKA alive so that future generations can benefit from his karate teachings as we all have.
Osu!
