Im starting a new series where we break down the volleyball rules that create the most confusion for coaches, players, parents, and officials.

Today’s Rule:

Can a setter reach over the net?

YES—but only under specific circumstances.

According to the 2025–2027 USA Volleyball Indoor Rulebook, Rule 10.2.2:

“A player may not contact the ball on the opponent’s side of the net before or during the opponent’s attack hit.”

Notice that the rule says “a player,” not “a setter.”

So why are we using a setter in this example?

Because setters are the players who most often reach over the net to play the second ball. That’s why this is commonly taught as a “setter rule,” even though it actually applies to any player who reaches beyond the net.

✅ LEGAL: The setter reaches over the net after the opponent’s attack hit is complete and does not interfere with play.

❌ ILLEGAL: The setter contacts the ball on the opponent’s side before or during the opponent’s attack hit.
