Hey folks: We had a season close-out event hosted by Kenny Lake. Thanks to Tim George and Ethan Goodwin for grooming the trails, which were in good shape despite recent snow and wind events. It was a cold day (-15F at race time) but beautiful sunny skies and no wind. These are tough kids and I never heard a word about being cold. There were some comments about skate skis not gliding very well. We had 16 skiers participate. Middle schoolers raced a 2.5K course and high school age (and others) raced a 5K course. Winners received edible medals baked by Judith. If anyone has photos of the winners and their medals, send them and I will post.
It was a fun day for everyone and thanks to the volunteers and parents who showed up. Here are the results: In the high school boys race, Sheperd Korth finished first followed by Andrew Bryan, with Brett Gearhart in third place. Coaches Jack Cornish and Mackenzie Dysinger also participated. In the girls high school results, Ally Fields earned the top spot, followed by Mariah Abbott (classic skiing) and Kayla Abbott in third. For the middle schoolers, Timothy Lorenz finished first, followed by Jason Dysinger in second and Jackson Ashton in third place.
Afterwards coach Rogers summed up the season and presented some certificates, plus letters and pins to the high school skiers. Sheperd Korth earned Most Valuable Skier for the high schoolers for his consistently best times and for his strong work ethic in practice. Brett Gearhart took the MVP honors for the middle schoolers, having skied in high school races throughout the season. And, Ally Fields took home the Most Improved Skier award for improving her times dramatically from last year. Let me emphasize that ALL our skiers improved over the course of the season. Thanks to the Nordic Ski Booster Club, seniors Ally Fields and Kayla Abbott will take home their skate skis. This gesture is to promote continued interest in the sport and continued practice of a healthy life skill.
Thanks to everyone for a good season, especially Jack Cornish for his coaching and ski expertise, and Mackenzie Dysinger for her continued assistance with conditioning. She has a knack for making suffering fun. I'm proud of these kids for sticking with the program despite some very challenging conditions this year. Skiing at -30 takes a special kind of toughness.
If anyone took more pictures, send them along and I will post. Thanks to Jenny Moser and Tari Patinka for these.
