If you are looking to really test your backcountry ability, take a look at the Linville Gorge Trail. 14 miles of tough hiking along Linville River. Go prepared with plenty of food and water and take a compass. The trail is unmarked in many locations. But for those with the skills to make it through, it's a hike you won't soon forget.

September 26 is the National Park Services’ National Public Land Day. You can visit a National Park for free and volunteer at one of their events. Or just take a trash bag to your favorite park and leave it cleaner than you found it. We should all do our part to protect our wild spaces.
