BARON RANCH TRAIL RUN | 02/18/24
The Santa Barbara County Trails Council is promoting this running event as part of its popular Island View Trail Run series. This event is to celebrate the grand opening of the Arroyo Quemado Trail. The long-awaited event was delayed by the Alisal Fire and the ensuing damage from two rainy seasons.
Since the fire, adding a new mile-long trail along the hillside in the lower canyon offers a fresh experience. The trail system provides stunning ocean and mountain vistas, diverse ecosystems, and a chance to connect with the Gaviota's rich natural heritage.
• Who: Trail runners from near and far
• What: A multi-distance Trail Run in a scenic location
• When: Sunday, February, 18th
• Where: Baron Ranch on the Gaviota Coast
• Distances: 2, 4, 6.5, and 13.3 miles
• Entry Fee: $30 for all distances
• Why: It's a challenge, and you get a free catered lunch
• Details: https://islandviewtrail.run/
Trail maintenance is now a year-round program—the proceeds from the event support ongoing trail repairs at the county-owned Baron Ranch.

The need for volunteer support is never more evident. The Franklin Trail is one of many that will need volunteers to help bring it back to being safe to run.

TRAILS NEED TIME TO RECOVER
While we certainly understand the urge to be outside and run, hike or bike after a week of rain, you have probably heard, “If it sticks to your heels or wheels, it’s time to turn around.” This is particularly true for many trails in Santa Barbara County with sticky clay treads. Some trails dry quickly, but most take 4 to 5 days after a measurable rain event.
We will need help repairing trails. Sign up to volunteer.

National Take-a-Hike Day (Today)
Certainly, it is not too much to ask to reflect on the value of trails on a day tagged for trail appreciation and enjoyment.
It is also a good day to ask what are we, as a community, doing to promote public engagement in land stewardship and trail use for all types of outdoor recreation.
