In warm weather, when handling trout, it's important to minimize stress and harm to the fish. Here are some tips:
1. **Use barbless hooks**: Barbless hooks are easier to remove and cause less injury to the fish.
2. **Handle with wet hands**: Wet your hands before touching the fish. This helps protect their sensitive slime layer, which helps prevent infections.
3. **Keep the fish in water**: If you're practicing catch and release, minimize air exposure. Keep the fish in the water as much as possible and avoid squeezing it tightly.
4. **Use a landing net**: A soft, rubberized landing net can help you safely lift the fish out of the water without harming its skin or scales.
5. **Avoid touching gills**: The gills are delicate and can be easily damaged. Handle the fish gently and avoid touching the gills.
6. **Revive the fish**: If the fish appears exhausted after a fight, hold it gently in the water, allowing water to flow through its gills until it regains its strength.
7. **Release gently**: When releasing the fish, hold it gently in the water, facing upstream, until it swims away on its own.
Remember, the goal is to minimize stress and injury to the fish so they have the best chance of survival after being released.
