Rest is not a reward for finishing everything.

It is part of the work. And in the postpartum season it is part of recovery. Not a nice-to-have. A biological necessity.

But most of us have been conditioned to feel guilty about it. Like stopping means falling behind. Like resting while the laundry piles up is somehow failing.

It isn't.

Your nervous system needs regular opportunities to fully switch off. And it doesn't require a perfect quiet house or a two-hour nap to get there. It just requires permission.

Legs up the wall while baby naps next to you. A supported recline during tummy time. Five slow intentional breaths before you get out of bed. Lying down with your eyes closed even if sleep doesn't come.

These count. All of them count.

Give yourself permission to let them.

Most of us spend our days in a low-grade state of activation. Not in crisis. Just never fully at rest.

Screens, to-do lists, background noise, the mental load of new parenthood. All of it keeps the nervous system gently on. And a nervous system that never fully switches off doesn't recover the way it needs to.

Restorative yoga exists specifically to change that. Full blog post on the link in bio.

Postpartum recovery starts with breath. Not crunches. Not cardio. Not a return to your pre-pregnancy routine.

Breath.

The same diaphragmatic breathing we practiced throughout pregnancy is your foundation for rebuilding from the inside out. Everything else comes after.

I came back from my first postpartum stronger than I went into pregnancy.

Not because I hustled my way back. Because I was intentional about rebuilding from the inside out. I saw a pelvic floor PT (Becky Montag) around my six week appointment, did the exercises she gave me consistently, and took the long view.

The proof for me was getting back into arm balances and inversions through Yogi Flight School | Arm Balance Training Crow pose felt more effortless than it ever had before. That deep core connection was doing its job.

This isn't a story about getting your body back. It's a story about building something stronger than what was there before.

Your baby has been inside your body for their entire existence up until the moment they were born.

Of course they want to be close. Of course they want to be held. Of course they want you.

Touch is everything in those early weeks. For bonding. For co-regulation of the nervous system. For temperature. For so much that research continues to confirm.

Let them be close. Let yourself be close. This season is temporary and it will pass faster than you expect.

The first 40 days are not a performance.

There is no right way to feel. No timeline you're supposed to be on. No version of this that looks the same for everyone.

What helps is releasing the expectation that any of it should look a certain way. Full blog post on the link in bio.

This concept keeps showing up across everything we talk about. That's not an accident.

On the mat we practice observing our thoughts and choosing which ones to keep. Over and over in stillness. So that when things are not still, not calm, not quiet, you already know how to pause.

Simple idea. Not easy to apply. Worth coming back to every single time.

Every baby is different. Every postpartum experience is different. And yet we measure both against the same narrow set of numbers and expectations.

Eight to twelve feeds a day. Two to three hour stretches. Sleeping through the night by a certain age.

My son ate every thirty minutes. Each feeding took thirty minutes. The worry that created, based entirely on numbers that didn't apply to him, was a real drain on already limited energy.

The numbers are guidelines. Your baby didn't read the book.

Talk about it before baby arrives.

When do you want visitors? How long can they stay? Who will genuinely help and who will add to your mental load? What do you want from your partner in those first days?

These aren't conversations to have at 3am with a newborn. They're conversations to have now, when you have the capacity to think clearly and communicate what you actually need.

Work it out with your partner first. Let them take point on communicating with their family. Then protect that bubble together.

And know this: whatever you decide, you're allowed to change your mind. You don't fully know what you'll need until you're living it.
