GLACIER UPDATE:
To Glacier Ice Arena Users:
Well, this certainly has been a crazy year! From the City of Grand Junction saying that they would be submitting a proposal to purchase the rink, then NOT, to being forced to close down due to a world wide health pandemic. Who would have thought back in March that we would still be under the strict guidelines that the nation is under due to COVID.
Due to the uncertainty of the COVID Pandemic, there is no timetable for when the rink will re-open. COVID-19 still puts restrictions on normal business operations and Glacier has stated that with the current restrictions, it simply can not generate the revenue to reopen based on the current limitations.
Youth sports in general and even at the high school level are not sure if a season for 2020-2021 is plausible. There is also some uncertainty with RMAC and CMU hockey. It does not look promising that CMU will be able to play any games in the fall.
In the meantime there is another issue, as everyone knows, Glacier is for sale and has been on the market since February of 2019. It was our sincere hope that the City would step up and purchase the rink. The purchase dropped off the table back in February but was going to come back to discussion at the beginning of March of this year, then COVID hit…Now the City is struggling to cut it’s budget due to revenue short fall.
As we stand today, we do have a contract on the rink and the current buyer is willing to lease the rink to the City (or any other entity) as an ice rink for a minimum of 5 years. Our recommendation to our user groups is to contact your City Council members and City Manager and let them know what the rink means to you and this community and perhaps if our voices are loud enough, they will bring this discussion back to the table. We have been talking with the City, but the City needs to hear from the community how important this is!!!
When we have more information, we will share it with all!
Truly
Glacier

Please take a few minutes to tell the City of Grand Junction that an ice arena is wanted by completing this survey. There are several places to select ice are options and several “other” boxes where you can write in your own ice arena requests. The city is listening to the public right now. Give them something to listen to. Please complete the survey and share it too!
The Preliminary Public Forum Survey: Deadline is Monday, August 10th July 13-16, 2020 Grand Junction Parks and Recreation hosted a series of public input sessions. These sessions, plus your input here, will help shape what topics and issues the larger community should respond to through a random-sample mail survey that will hit 6,000 mailboxes in late August/early Se...

HOW DOES THIS MAKE YOU FEEL?
We hope you are all doing well. There really is no new news at this time as we are still waiting to see when facilities such as Ice Rinks might be able to fully open. We will keep you posted as any new developments.
There is one issue that we would like to address as it could possibly impact the future of the rink. As most of you know, the rink is for Sale and there was strong interest from the City of Grand Junction to purchase the rink. There was a story on the front page of the Daily Sentinel about the interest of City looking at the possible purchase and in the article they had interviewed City Mayor Taggart. This prompted a Face Book post from Cody Davis who is a Republican Candidate running for District 1 County Commissioner. Attached is his post.
Glacier does not want to side with a particular political affiliation, but this post by Cody Davis was against the Glacier, YOUR Glacier, and we certainly do not want an elected official who is against our facility!
We feel it necessary to respond to his erroneous claims:
1, If he does not support the ice rink as a private citizen, then we respect his opinion. HOWEVER, as a County Commissioner, he is publicly stating that he does not support or UNDERSTAND the importance of a rink or the users such as our Youth Hockey teams, Figure Skating Club, Adult In-House Leagues, CMU Hockey, etc..or the community members we employ.
2, He is ASSUMING that there is no demand for a rink because it is for sale. He has NO CLUE why we are selling it and it has NOTHING to do with a lack of demand. Do you really want a County Commissioner who bases their opinion on assumptions? We would hope that an elected COUNTY COMMISSIONER would base their decisions on facts, not feelings.
3, He is calling out the City of Grand Junction Mayor saying that his statement in the paper regarding the importance of having an ice rink here is “Simply a value judgement that does not line up with the market demand”. And how exactly did he come to that fictional conclusion? Did any of you get call or poll asking you if you would like to see our ice rink stay open? We didn’t!
4, Cody Davis stated that the City should not “be in the business of saving community novelties”. Look at the definition of Novelty. It states “one of a kind”. So YES Mr. Davis, that is EXACTLY why the City should be looking at purchasing the Rink. Because it is a ONE OF A KIND, and the only rink in Grand Junction.
What are YOUR thoughts on this? Comment below, but please keep it PG-13.
Stay safe out there, we hope to see you all again soon.
