It’s Tuesday which means Mr. Jason and Mr. Rushing taught tonight!

Did you know they are father and son? We love this duo.

Mr. Rushing started his journey in the martial arts in the art of Taekwondo, eventually earning his adult Red Belt. After the school had closed, Mr. Rushing found his new love of the arts in the world of Kenpo, joining our academy in the summer of 2013, along with his son Jason. Mr. Rushing has been assisting on the mats as a teacher since he earned his purple belt, and has used his incredible writing skills to author many white papers on the art of Kenpo. He has a deep understanding and love for the academics of the art, and enjoys sharing that love with the countless students he teaches week after week. Joshua is working towards his 1st Degree Black.

Mr. Jason has been trying to fight since he was a teeny tiny 3 year old! He joined our school when he was 6. He has absolutely loved it since his first class. He has continued to work hard in earning his ranks. He earned his Junior Black Belt when he was 16. He doesn’t shy away from a challenge. He started teaching and helping out his dad on Tuesdays and is so great with the kids. He is currently working in his 1st Degree Black Belt and we can’t believe he just celebrated his 20th birthday!

Our goal is to develop your children into martial artists, not bullies. We teach respect, discipline, self control and confidence. We also teach how, when and where to fight, and when not to fight but instead flee. We do this by making sure they have a good understading of self defense on both their feet and on their backs.

Shout out to Ethan for moving on to his next rank! That’s so awesome.

Last night I was honored (and humbled) to hit a milestone I’d never thought I’d reach — my 5th Degree Black Belt. I’ve always looked up to anyone who wore a senior rank, as their knowledge was something I’ve felt I’d never acquire.

Incredibly this year also marks 25 years since I first stepped onto the mat and the 15th anniversary of operating Grand Valley Kenpo. It’s humbling to look back on everything this journey has brought into my life.

I’m especially thankful for my instructor and mentor, Rich Hale, whose guidance for nearly 14 years has meant so incredibly much.

While I’m grateful for this milestone, I know the rank is simply a reflection of the time spent learning, teaching and having the time of my life with my family and friends on the mats. Thank you all for being part of the journey!
