Really enjoyed visiting the WoodenBoat School in Brooklin today with friends from Key West. There’s something special about seeing the craftsmanship, tradition, and care that goes into building wooden boats by hand.

Made me even more excited for the Grand Laker being built for Bold Coast Guide Co by Nate Bacon.

And that's a wrap! Great long weekend with Bob, Brian and Logan. Good times, lots of laughs, great food, some paddling and fishing adventures, and maybe - just possibly, a few new nicknames for each other.

One of those days that reminds me why I love guiding — three generations together on the St. Croix: father, son, and grandson.

We paddled from Vanceboro to Little Falls, worked on a few paddling skills, caught some nice smallmouth, and stopped for a shore lunch along the way. The St. Croix has been carrying people through this country for generations, which made the day feel even more fitting.

Beautiful weather, good fishing, plenty of laughs, and a lobster dinner at Weatherby's Lodge to finish it off.

Days like this are what it’s all about.

Day one of three with the Berubes. Bob (my wife’s uncle), his son Brian and his son Logan (I call him Bill. Maybe it wil stick).

After checking in at Weatherby's Lodge today, we started with some casting instruction and covered the basics of getting comfortable with a fly rod.

Then it was down to the stream to put it all into practice—and everyone caught their first fish on a fly rod! A few feisty smallmouth bass made for a great introduction to fly fishing.

My favorite part of the day was Logan announcing he had a fish on and reeling up a small rock attached to the fly. Logan (10) promptly announced “I caught a frikkin rock”. It was even funnier when I heard him tell the story to his mother later on.

Tomorrow we paddle the St Croix!

Leaving Bold Coast Base Camp (aka home) for Grand Lake Stream. I’ve been very excited for this trip. 3-days with 3-generations, father, son, and grand-son. We will be targeting bass, perch, and other warm water species on Grand Lake Steam and Big Lake. What I’m most excited about is our canoe trip on the St Croix and their first shore lunch. More to come!

Morning adventure with Nemo and Finn in a local covert. Good chance for Finn to learn from an experienced dog. We went out early before it got too hot but still didn’t stay out long, about 30 mins.

Don’t worry, I won’t post puppy pics every day 🙂. Ok maybe I will. We’ll see.

Meet Finn, the newest member of the Bold Coast family.

Finn is a six-month-old Llewellyn Setter from a well-known hunting line here in Maine. He’s our third Llewellyn, so it’s probably safe to say we have a soft spot for the breed.

If you aren't familiar with them, Llewellyn Setters are a field-bred line of English Setter known for being intelligent, athletic and close-working bird dogs. They tend to hunt within good contact of their person rather than ranging way out, which makes them wonderful companions in the grouse woods. At home, though, they’re often remarkably gentle, affectionate and easygoing.

That combination is a big part of why we love them so much—loving and mellow at home, but all business when it’s time to go to work.

Finn is still very much a puppy, with plenty to learn, but we’re excited to watch him grow into the dog he’s meant to be. There should be a lot of Maine woods, bird cover and adventures ahead for this guy. Apologies in advance for all the photos I will likely post ;)

For you upland hunters, I'll be offering grouse and woodcock hunting over him in 2027.

Welcome to the family, Finn.

There’s something special about watching a father and son learn something new together.

Today’s Learn to Fly Fish day on Grand Lake Stream was the third father-and-son trip I’ve guided this year, and those days have quickly become some of my favorites.

We started on dry land with the fundamentals, and they both caught on quickly. Before long, we moved to the stream and put those new skills to work. Each of them landed a smallmouth bass, and one truly big fish gave us a quick look before getting away.

The fish always add to the excitement, but the best part is seeing a family slow down, share a few laughs and make memories together on the water. Those are the days that stay with you.

Getting ready for a day on Grand Lake Stream, teaching a father and son to fly fish. I love days like this.
