Most gyms start with a workout. We start with questions.

Before a new client touches a weight here, they go through the most thorough screening in Grand Rapids.

It starts online - our intake covers your history, your schedule, and what you've tried before. Want measurements? We take them. Don't? We skip it.

Then we sit down and talk. Your history, your goals, what you actually want to get out of training - not what a template says you should want.

Then a physical assessment: where you're imbalanced, what moves well, what doesn't, and what kind of training your body is ready for right now.

Only then do we write your program. It's built from what we found, and it changes every 4-6 weeks as you improve - because a plan that doesn't evolve stops working.

No guesswork. No cookie-cutter first workout. A process that starts with you.

Curious what your assessment would find? Text (616) 585-0641.

Our favorite nutrition tool isn't an app. It's a farmers market.

The Fulton Street Farmers Market has been Grand Rapids' oldest and largest since 1922 - about 200 local vendors across the year, a mile and a half east of downtown. Some of the families selling there go back generations.

Why do we point clients there? Not because a local tomato is magically more nutritious than a frozen one. It isn't. It's because fresh, in-season produce tastes better and often costs less - and that makes eating whole food the easy choice instead of the hard one. Habits you enjoy are habits you keep.

Fall is storage-crop season: apples, pears, squash, beets, carrots. Most of it keeps for weeks, so one Saturday trip stocks the kitchen for a while.

Open Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, 8am-2pm through October. Saturdays year-round. 1145 Fulton St E.

If you go this weekend, pick up one thing you've never cooked. That's the whole assignment.

Your first week at GRIP looks different than most gyms.

No jump straight into "let's see what you can do" workouts. No guessing.

Here's the actual process:

**Session 1** — Conversation and movement screening. We're learning about your goals, your history, what's worked or failed before, and how you move through basic patterns. This tells us a lot.

**Sessions 2-3** — Baseline establishment. We're testing your actual starting point across strength, mobility, and conditioning — not to embarrass you, but to have real numbers. We're also watching how you respond to different rep ranges, tempos, and exercise variations.

**Week 2 onward** — Program design built on what we learned. Your plan is built for *your* reality: your schedule, your limitations, your goals, and your response patterns.

The assessment phase isn't wasted time. It's the most important data we collect. Trainers who skip this step are just guessing. We don't guess.

By week three, you'll notice the difference: the program feels like it was built for you because it was.

Here's a quick self-assessment most people have never done:

How long does it take you to fall asleep?

If you're out in under 5 minutes, you're not a "good sleeper" — you're sleep-deprived. A well-rested person takes about 10 to 15 minutes to fall asleep.

If it takes over 30 minutes, your sleep drive or routine needs work.

The sweet spot — 10 to 15 minutes — means your body is tired enough to sleep but not so exhausted that it crashes the moment you're horizontal.

This one data point tells you more about your sleep health than any wearable.

A 58-year-old client came in saying she'd "never been a gym person." She walked for exercise and figured that was enough.

Her DEXA scan showed significant muscle loss for her age — not unusual for someone who's been cardio-only for decades. Her bone density was also trending down.

We started with two days per week of structured resistance training. Controlled movements, full range of motion, progressive weight increases every 4 to 6 weeks.

Eight months later: measurably more lean mass, improved bone density markers, and she described feeling "stronger than I did at 40." Her words, not ours.

Walking is good. It's not enough.

"Cardio is your salary. Muscle is your investment."

Cardio keeps the lights on — heart health, daily energy, endurance. But muscle is what compounds over time. It protects your joints, drives your metabolism, regulates blood sugar, and determines whether you're independent or dependent at 75.

The research is unambiguous: adults who maintain muscle mass as they age have lower rates of all-cause mortality, better metabolic markers, fewer falls, and significantly higher quality of life.

Strength training isn't a gym hobby. It's a long-term health strategy that most people start too late.
